I love interactive toys. So when a FurReal Chatty Charlie the Barkin’ Beagle Review came our way everyone was excited to meet him. But as I take my Hasbro Toy Tribe duties seriously I decided that this time I had to get the whole family (well the kids) round to my house to meet him.
Chatty Charlie the Barkin’ Beagle Overview
Charlie features a glowing necklace which is able to translate his barks so you can understand what he is saying. Charlie responds to sounds and touch and even movement as you walk past him. He has over 80 phrases translated and moved his ears over his eyes when talking to you or trying to hide after making noises! Charlie is one windy dog!
FurReal Chatty Charlie the Barkin’ Beagle is recommended for ages 4+ due to small parts.
Chatty Charlie the Barkin’ Beagle Review
Charlie is absolutely adorable. His ‘voice’ is so fun and playful, I find myself chatting to him as I walk past. Mostly to just wake him up. We have had him out of the box for a few weeks now and played with him a lot. One of the things I was worried about was his ears, with an over-enthusiastic 3 (nearly 4) and 4 years old niece and nephew, I wasn’t sure his moving parts would cope. But I let them do their stuff with him and he was totally fine. Toys are made to be played with and I would personally recommend Charlie for their age group and a little older so it was good to see he could withstand some vigorous play without falling apart.
Even though Charlie has plenty phrases and is most definitely on the chatty side, he doesn’t interact personally with you. He runs through his programme so despite you talking to him and playing with him, his responses won’t always correspond with what you are saying. Personally, I would have loved to have had him acknowledge and respond accordingly! Maybe an option for an upgraded model in the future?
That being said, we still love Charlie. He is fun and cheeky and had the younger kids laughing and entertained for a good while when they first took him out of the box. He still gets all the attention now when they see him. They don’t mind that he doesn’t personally interact with them, they just love to hear what he will say next.
He will put himself into sleep mode when he doesn’t detect any sounds or movement/touch. He will tell you he is sleepy and turn off until someone next wakes him. He also has an on/off button too for when he needs a longer sleep or overnight so he doesn’t wake up and disturb the house! There isn’t a volume control though.
I love him, the kids all love him and he is a big hit in our household. He is a new member of the family and has settled in well. I thought maybe it was the novelty factor, but a few weeks in he still gets asked for when I see the kids and asked about when I go to visit them! His phrases and playful nature seem to have brought him alive in their imaginations and that can’t be a bad thing, can it! We now have a dog without the messy cleanup and feeding parts!
