The Person Controller by David Baddiel Review and Giveaway

book cover image person controller review

Recently Olivia received a copy of David Baddiel’s new children’s book The Person Controller. Having already read, and loved, The Parent Agency, I knew she would most probably love this book too.

At 370 pages long, I was worried that it would be too long for her. However, there are illustrations interspersed throughout with there also fewer words per page than an adults book. Olivia has only just discovered the joy of reading for fun instead of just reading because school said she has too, something confirmed at her recent parents evening. But still, she has taken her time to read it partly because she was reading it together with her cousin and enjoyed reading it together.

Let me tell you a little about the story.

Fred and Ellie are twins.

But not identical twins. They like the same things, especially video games. They are good at them but not with things like dealing with the school bullies or football!

Then they get a video-game controller off the Mystery man which look like absolutely nothing like any other controller they have ever seen! And it doesn’t control any of their games.

But, when they find out what it does control………….well it certainly seems like the answer to their problems and the key to their wildest dreams.

Sounds ideal, doesn’t it! I could do with this at work I tell ya!

The book is a fun read, not that I read it myself fully, but when Olivia and my niece started to read it, there were giggles aplenty on the train. They read it on our way to Blackpool to keep them occupied.

So what was the verdict?

O: The book was amusing, especially Eric and his bacon sandwiches he really loves bacon sandwiches. The controller looked lots of fun, especially being able to change yourself as I love dressing up! (mum: she really does!) that would be so much fun. My favourite part was the football match, Ellie was a good sister to Fred (no spoilers sorry you will have to read to find out why).

E: This book was excellent. I couldn’t put it down and wanted to keep on reading. I like that the book had pictures and was written like a child. This made it more fun. I want a person controller too.

From a parents point of view it is an entertaining story from what I managed to read and one I was more than happy for the girls to read, the giggles every so often proving what a good read it really was!

November 6, 2015 at 2:13 pm

Oh I loved reading as a child, still do now. I recently met my year 3 teacher through work-she remembered me, and said she remembers vividly me always having a book on my knee trying to sneak reading under the desk-she didn’t know whether to tell me off for not doing my maths or be thrilled I was reading! (Maybe don’t tell Olivia about my not so subtle sneaking!)
