I love a good chocolate bar anyone knows that. I have a serious sugar addiction and no desire to curb it. But recently I have been trying to regain some good eating habits and incorporate exercise more into my daily routine. So when the chance arose to try out some Mars, Snickers and Bounty Protein bars came up I jumped at the chance.
Up until this past week, I had been following an exercise programme aimed at getting women slowly back into working out. My diet embraced this and I noticed that I was coming round to eating better. I still ate chocolate but in fewer quantities, ie 1 Freddo or chomp and not a family size bar of Dairy Milk. But what if I could combine this with my workouts?
We all know our bodies need protein, especially when working out. Protein shakes and supplements are a booming business but unless you opt for consuming a lot of chicken breast – because who doesn’t love chicken!, some protein options aren’t exactly flavoursome are they?
The company behind some of our favourite chocolate bars have introduced a range of chocolate bars with added protein. So not only can you get your sugar fix but also have your protein needs met too. Win, win if you ask me! I couldn’t wait to try out the Mars, Snickers and Bounty Protein bars for myself.
The Difference in the Mars, Snickers and Bounty Protein Bars to the Original.
The main notable difference is obviously the size. The bars look different physically. Inside the wrapper and out. A quick glance at the values shows that not only are they packing around 4x more protein than your standard bar they are also much lower in calories, sugars and carbs too. So a much healthier version all round. This makes it much more suitable for an after workout snack. Much better than than grabbing something from the vending machine on the way out of your local leisure centre because you worked up a ferocious appetite (yep totally done this on more than 1 occasion).
Yep, I totally did forget to snap a pic of this before I ate them!
How do they taste?
That’s they big question, isn’t it! Do they taste just as good as their sugar filed delicious namesakes? I’m not going to lie I have tasted some nasty protein bars before now and drunk some truly awful protein shakes too. Would these Mars, Snickers and Bounty Protein bars live up to the hype?
All 3 bars are thicker and more chewy to eat. Does that make sense? I struggled to eat them, especially the Mars one as I found it quite hard to eat consistency wise. It is to be expected as is the case with all protein bars and the texture of the original bars isn’t quite there.
Whilst they didn’t retain all of the flavour and textures from the original bars, I think on the whole they fused them well. You could still definitely taste components of the original bars in the protein versions. The Bounty one didn’t have that full on coconut taste to it and I much preferred the protein version of the bar. I love Snickers anyway and was pleased to find it did still taste somewhat like the original and was an enjoyable eat.
Actually, for me, it was the Bounty bar. I was totally expecting to hate it as I’m not a big Bounty fan. Usually I will always opt for a Snickers but it somehow the Bounty bar felt lighter to eat and masked more of the protein taste I found. I definitely enjoyed it more than I would a normal Bounty. Whilst I did enjoy the Snickers bar too, I would have preferred a bit more of a nutty flavour to it personally. Coming up in the last place was the Mars. I’m sorry, I’m not a big Mars bar fan anyway and I actually had to eat this in 2 parts as I found it hard to eat.
All 3 bars did pack a big punch and hit the spot, especially the Mars bar. I had it after a Slim fast (half a bar) for my breakfast before work (you are allowed a 100 calorie snack). I actually felt full until lunch. The extra protein in my diet definitely helped me to stick to the plan and I am seriously considering adding half a bar into my diet on work days. Running around a shop all day works up quite an appetite. And I absolutely welcome anything that doesn’t have me binging on full on carbs and sugar at lunchtime!
