Who doesn’t love a good family board game? We have so many in our house but we love playing them together and we are always open to trying out new games. So when I came across 5 Second Rule at BlogOn Xmas last month, I just knew it would be a big hit. The idea sounds really easy but I have to admit, I’m not the quickest thinker so this game would really push me out of my comfort zone! Read on for our 5 Second Rule Review from University Games and see exactly how quick you need to be to win (spoiler: a lot quicker than I was!)
5 Second Rule Review
The premise is simple, each card asks you to name 3 things. Each card with a different topic. Easy right? But can you name 3 things with the timer counting down giving you 5 seconds to give your answers? The name of the game gives it all away and to be the winner you need to be quick off the mark and get those answers out as fast as you can.
For 3 – 6 players. Age 8+
What can I say! I know from BlogOn this would be fun but I couldn’t have predicted what would happen between my youngest sister and Olivia when they played together. From the very first card, this game was a big hit! It’s pretty simple to play. Set it up as above and you’re ready to go. 5 seconds, 3 answers can you do it? I couldn’t, at times neither could Olivia.
I couldn’t, at times neither could Olivia or my sister who spent a lot of 5-second countdowns just going ermmm……. Even on the easiest of questions for example; name 3 reality TV shows? My sister is the biggest reality TV addict ever and she went, TOWIE, Chelsea and The Only Way Is Essex, which even I know is TOWIE.
The spinning of the balls down the timer put her off was her excuse. I won’t tell you what my answer was! But damn, it got competitive fast, like 5 cards in! Cries of cheat and do-over echoing around my kitchen as I left them to battle it out amongst themselves.
Olivia was asked for three things beginning with Tri…… Her answers? Triathalon! which took her nearly a whole 5 seconds to even say! This girl sounded like she had swallowed a dictionary which just made it all the funnier! With 5 seconds to get your answers out, it’s anyone’s guess what will come out of your mouth.
If you wanted to you could pass on the question to another player or switch to a different card. Landing in the danger zone meant you had answer correctly or you lost a turn! This game went on for a while. As in their way, they have called rematch and I can see this being our go-to game for Christmas day.
This is an absolutely brilliant game. So much fun to play, I haven’t laughed that much playing a game for a long time let me tell you! I am so pleased we got to review as it is now Olivia’s new favourite board game. If you are looking for something fun and different for all the family you really can’t go wrong with this.
I also loved that there are so many different cards with different answers on. Double-sided too, so you won’t get bored or even get the same answer twice for a long time! Some of the questions where a bit too much for Olivia so we improvised a little with those. I can’t even express how much we love this game (or maybe I did with all my gushing). We definitely recommend this game, you need it in your life.
