Towards the end of the summer, my sister and I rejoined our local council leisure centres. As well as being able to use all the gym facilities across 7 sites, we are also able to take part in classes and it includes the use of the pools too.
We are big fans of aqua classes and a few years back, we used to make the most out of the passes by swimming in the adult only sessions whilst the girls were at school and doing daytime aqua classes. This is one of the things we really wanted to start back up again now we have our passes back again. Especially as both Olivia and my oldest niece are old enough to join us in classes and the gym as long as we are too.
But as it has been a while since we have had our passes or even regularly been to the local swimming pools, it is safe to say we need to get sorted with suitable costumes, towels and bags so we are equipped to take our swimming from leisure pool to the training pool.
Swimming is possibly one of the best ways to get fit.
Especially as both my sister and I suffer from back and joint related problems. It is easy to just get in the water and swim as opposed to taking part in a full and physical exercise class.
I remember the benefits so well. One of the things I loved about swimming was how I felt like I was able to breathe better and deeper after a good swim. It just made me feel so calm and relaxed like I had had an amazing workout but without all the sweating and exertion that came with the classes we like to do.
It was especially beneficial to me after a workout in the gym.
We also used to partake in an aqua Zumba class after a dry Zumba class to boost the workout a little and keep moving. This is something I need to get back into but being a plus size girl, I need to make sure I have the right costumes for not only swimming but aqua classes too so I am fully supported and protected at all times.

For me though, things like wearing ladies swim shorts are ideal to help me feel covered and comfortable in the pool especially with the movement going on in an aqua Zumba class! Personally, I prefer higher necklines to fully cover my bust and swimming costumes that come a little longer, like a short swimsuit so I know everything is fully covered.
A waterproof bag is also a must and good towels too.
We all know how frustrating it can be trying to dry off in the pool changing rooms but making sure you are able to dry off quicker and easier with the help of suitable towels can make this so much easier. Especially when you are with kids and it is getting on for bedtime! Being organised so you can all get dry easier and quicker is definitely a priority in my book for swimming with young children.
I like to have easy access to my clothes but also, being clumsy I need a bag that is waterproof with easy access not only for my items but Olivia’s too.
Don’t forget the food!
Seriously, swimming makes everyone hungry. No one likes a hangry child (or parent), especially before bedtime. So make sure to take some suitable snacks and drinks with you to take the edge off before you get home. We always pack a bottle or two of water and a little snack depending on the time of day we go and if we are having a meal when we get home.
