Care for Yourself: Simple Ways to Destress, However Little Time You’ve Got!
Every parent feels the pressures of family life get to them now and again. While being a parent can be incredibly fulfilling you still need balance in your life to prioritise yourself care. Making time for you is not always easy. But you need to find the right practices to ensure you have proper downtime while also recharging your batteries.
The Right Nighttime Routine
It’s not just about getting to bed as soon as the kids are asleep; it’s about figuring out how you can adjust your sleep schedule to get an hour for yourself before the children wake up in the morning. If the children have settled into a sleep routine and you know what time they go to bed, you can start to create the right nighttime routine for yourself. But the important thing is to make your nightly ritual something you look forward to. This could mean thinking about buying the perfect pair of reading glasses and a pile of books you’ve been meaning to get around to, or just sitting in a quiet space with a podcast so you can gently drift off to sleep. Yes, if your children don’t sleep through the night it can prove difficult to have any form of the nighttime routine. However, this doesn’t last forever. If you have children that struggle with sleep, think about incorporating a nighttime routine together, reinforcing that signal that it is time for bed not just for the children but for you as well.
Learning to Relax Mindfully
People think about relaxing as a lengthy task, something which nobody has time for. But the important thing about learning to relax is about getting into that frame of mind, so whenever you are feeling stressed you can go to this other place in your mind, so you can calm your mind and body and not feel the symptoms of stress. But if you can get to the point using certain techniques where your body can relax so, therefore, you don’t feel so stressed or deprived of energy this can help you in difficult circumstances. A very good example is breathing techniques. There are many sorts of breathing techniques out there, but the Wim Hof program has proven beneficial for many people because they are able to take control over their autonomic nervous system which means that they don’t feel anxious or stressed so they can relax quickly without needing to go and meditate for twenty minutes (something no parent has time for)!
Learn to Prioritise Yourself
Prioritising yourself can seem like a difficult task. But when there are so many pressures on you in life, you need to find the right approaches to self-care that work for you. This can include setting time aside to read books by your favourite author, or perhaps finding a massage therapist in Colorado Springs, CO and elsewhere for an occasional treat after a long week. We can all struggle with making any time for ourselves when we have got so many things to do, but we can figure out the best ways to make time for ourselves. If you feel you don’t have the time to prioritise yourself is this because you think you’ll need a lot of time? Whether you have one hour or five minutes, there are little ways to care for yourself.
Comments
This is something I’m am learning to do at the age of 41. Ive never made time for myself as I’ve always put my children and husband first. I sometimes sit at the end of my bed, or on the back door step and give myself 5 minutes. Just to breathe in and out slowely. Those few minutes makes all the difference.
Good advice, thank you.
I think this is also important for Grandparents too. Many of us are actively involved in the care of our grandchildren as i am.
Having health problems I can’t do as much as I would like too. Having a good routine is also important for us too and prioritising is not selfish. It’s selfcare so I have more to give
My spiritual life and meditation play a bit part in that too
