What Type of Mattress Do You Need?
Back in May, I ordered myself a brand new bed. I had needed one for such a long time, and my sleep struggles due to Fibromyalgia solidified the fact that my bed wasn’t suitable at all for my needs.
After much searching, humming and ahhing, I finally made my choice. You see, without trying one out in a shop, I had no idea what type of mattress I would need. I was looking for a bargain mattress sale to get a better quality mattress for a lower price. Ultimately I settled on an extra firm orthopaedic mattress on a divan base in grey. My new bed arrived in July, and I finally feel like my body is getting the support it needs when I am sleeping. It hasn’t improved my Fibromyalgia sleep issues. However, nothing short of a miracle can solve them if I am honest.
Struggling with choosing the right kind of mattress, made me think, surely I am not alone when it comes to not knowing what type of mattress you can buy and what you need. A lot of people may not even give it a second thought unless they are struggling with health issues. So I thought I would together with a little guide on the best kind of mattresses for different people.
Bear in mind, that this list is subjective and what may be suitable for one is entirely wrong for someone else with the same criteria. If you are looking for a mattress sale UK, it could be best to try them out in person to get a feel for the different textures, materials and firmness in real life.
What Type of Mattress Do you Need?
Soft Mattresses
A soft mattress will have a lot of sags and hug when you lie on them. If you want to sink into a mattress, then this is the one for you. On a scale of 1 -10, with 10 being the firmest mattress you can get, a soft mattress will come up no higher than a 5. Soft mattresses are the perfect type of mattress for back sleepers who don’t need a lot of body support when sleeping.
Medium Mattress

A bit firmer than the soft mattress option, the medium firmness option is considered to be one of the most universally chosen mattresses when it comes to firmness levels. Most people will opt for some level of support but not want a mattress too firm. A go-to for back or side sleepers as it will give the support needed for their body curves due to the sleeping position.
Firm Mattress
Firm mattresses are designed to support the sleeper and keep them almost floating on top of the mattress. They usually provide support for various chronic pain conditions or illnesses. They are also advised for those who like to sleep on their fronts too.
So now we know a little bit more about the firmness, what type of mattress should you be looking at?
This is where it all comes down to personal preference. A task made even harder when two people are sharing and require different specifics when it comes to their sleeping environment. Did you know you can buy hybrid mattresses? Two different levels of comfort and firmness for each sleeper! Luckily I don’t have that issue. I sleep on a solid firmness rating of around 8/9 I would say. I need all the support I can get! I also opted for a pillow top mattress for extra comfort!
However, make sure you are confident in your decision to purchase a mattress, especially if shopping online. Looking for the best mattress australia online can be tricky if you are unsure of what type of mattress you need to sleep on.
Memory Foam Mattress
Memory foam mattresses are ideal for those who need hip and shoulder support. A memory foam mattress will hug you as you sleep and provide you with full-body support. Ideal for side sleepers, memory foam mattress, retain their shape to give you a supported nights sleep night after night. Be warned; if you don’t like to get too hot when sleeping, this might not be the right choice for you.
Gel Mattress
The gel is added to the foam layers or upholstery part of your mattress. They dissipate heat better than a memory foam although preference to how it feels could be a swaying factor in choosing a gel mattress.

Air/Water Bed
In this type of bed, air and water form the support for the bed. This is either done via free-flowing where the movement of air/water is unrestricted or chamber which stops the flow and holds the air and water in one place to provide more support. These types of mattress can be distracting for some – air beds are primarily used as spare beds for many people, and not everyone will get the support they need from choosing one of these two options.
Sprung Mattresses
Springs proved the inner support in sprung mattresses and the level of support directly relates to the firmness and support offered. The more springs in the mattress, the more support it will give you. Most mattresses using springs will have a cover over the top, so you don’t directly feel the springs as you lie down in bed.
Pillow Top
Pillow top mattresses can provide you with an extra layer of comfort. This can be offered in different styles, thickness or material depending on the manufacturer. You will find they will be either a smooth cover across the top of your mattress or comes pinned.
If you are anything like myself, there will be several different factors that come into play when it comes to choosing your new mattress. Being able to pinpoint and select something you will be lying on for a good chunk of the night every night needs to be based on an informed decision!
