Top 3 Tips to Being a Great Sports Parent
You’ve probably heard (or even seen) that overbearing parent who shouts at his kid and throws insults to the coach. This parent is a total embarrassment to the child and their team.
On the other hand, you’ve seen a parent who is always too busy to come to any games. Fortunately, there is a middle ground that is being a good sports parent. These tips will help you to strike that balance between being a great sports parent and a relaxed one.
Be supportive
Going to games, driving them to and from the field, and providing for their need is all part of being supportive. However, this is sports, and you must show some fanatic support. One of the ways you can do that is by buying their team jersey and wearing it for the games. You can even suggest to the other parents to do the same in support of their team.
More than just being parents sitting on the sidelines, wearing the team jersey shows you are their fans. The young chaps start feeling like real stars in the stadium. If the team doesn’t have team jerseys already, you can rally other parents and make plans to design jerseys for them. You can get youth baseball jersey designs on the internet and contribute money to make them outstanding for the team.
Be a parent
Your number one role to your child is to be their parent, not their coach. All a child wants is for mom and dad to be sitting on the sidelines when they are playing and cheering them on (in a civil manner). Your child needs you to be there when they need to be ferried to games when they need someone to lean on and mostly when they have done well.
As a parent, it’s also your job to be a good role model. Your kid is looking at you to see how you behave so they can do the same. If you are busy hauling profanities at the other team and speaking smack about them, that is what the child learns. Instead, focus on showing the child that the game is all about having fun, and the other team is not enemies.
Volunteer to help the team
Training a team is not an easy job, so the coach has his work cut out for him. As a good sports parent, you can show your support by helping the team with whatever they need. For instance, you can help to sell raffle tickets for the next championship game or even have a bake sale to raise funds for the team. Some moms bring pastries for the tam and refreshments to take after a long day of playing.
Being a parent does not end at providing and protecting the kids. You must support their passions and be their biggest cheerleader. Be careful not to force the kids to do what you want and instead allow them to choose their path with your support.
