Clarina woke up on the floor of the kitchen, the coven members surrounding her still just as they were before she passed out.
Her eyes refocused, the beautiful bright light she had seen as she came down the staircase was still radiating around her. Gingerly she looked up to the ladies protecting her as she raised her body up off the floor.
“Harlowe” she called out tentatively at first, the word feeling strange on her tongue. She hadn’t spoken that name for so many years, fear and sorrow preventing her from thinking of the person attached to the name. “Mum, I’m here” came the reply as the warm touch of her daughter seeped into her skin.
She had longed for this day. Ever since she had given up her only daughter. It was also a day she feared too. The prophecy had said many things. Many of them had come true, mostly things she wished would never come to fruition. Clarina found out she was pregnant after Luke died. Her heart broke all over again. Their time was destined but cruelly ripped from them prematurely. The pregnancy was just another way she would relive the trauma all over again.
They told her it was for the best, to remove her daughter’s powers like her grandmother had done to her too at a young age. Half witch, half-human. An ancient tome told of the girl with red hair born to a powerful witch and a humble, honest man. A girl that would fight evil with flames as vivid as her hair and as fiery as her soul. Someone who needed to be protected until it was time for her to face the fight of all fights. An age-old war longer than time itself was what awaited her in the future. She needed to be protected from those who sought to extinguish her flame before she fulfilled her destiny to rid the world of an evil older than planet Earth, older than everything that had ever existed.
Harlowe’s words pulled her from her thoughts. Her head running a million miles an hour as her eyes flitted from woman to woman. “How?” “Where?” she stammered as she took in the circle around the reunited mother and daughter.
Lori stepped forward breaking the circle to take lead.
“Good,” Clarina thought proud of the assertiveness the quietest coven member was showing.
“After, you know, Janey and The Disciples we couldn’t snap you out of it. But we didn’t want to leave you.” Lori glanced at her sisters nodding in agreement behind her. “We took it in turns to consult the tomes and find out as much as we could about what would happen next”
Clearing her throat, Lori tucked an errant strand of blonde hair behind her ears. “We found out about the girl with the fire and knew we had to find her. I practised my locator spell as you had shown me and after a few days, I found her”
Clarina though her heart would burst as she realised, the coven hadn’t abandoned her. They had gone on a rescue mission to save her. To help her, they had to leave her and bring back Harlowe to the fold. Lori continued “As soon as we found Harlowe we knew. She confirmed it as soon as she saw us and she was waiting. She could feel us coming and knew it was time”
“The Clarks taught me, they taught me really well mum”
Harlowe took over the conversation from her new coven sister. Her initiation had been completed before her mum had joined them in the kitchen. It caused light to be flooded back to White Manor to banish the clouds that had become a permanent fixture since the defeat.
“They unlocked my powers when they felt the threat and we followed you. I got all of your hopes and dreams for me, I felt each and every time you thought of me and sent your love. I have never left you and your bond has never left me. That’s how I knew you were in trouble. That you needed me. But I had to wait for everyone to figure out I existed too. I don’t blame you for what you did. I know how hard it was for you and I too miss dad every single day”
The mention of Luke sent a fluttering through her body as his face flashed in her mind. God, she missed him so much and Harlowe was everything she loved about him. He was still here, in Harlowe. She may not have him with her, but she had her daughter back and together they could fix this mess. Pushing herself up from the crossed-legged position she was now sat in on the floor, Clarina took her daughter’s hand once more and led her to through the house. They had work to do but first, she needed to bask in her presence and appreciate the sun being brought back into her life.
Lori held the coven back from following them.
Her senses predicting they would need some alone time to be reacquainted with each other. After all, Harlowe wasn’t a 5-day old baby anymore. She was 21 now and if the prophecy was correct she was not only the key to wiping out the Disciples but the sacrifice needed to do so. It was bittersweet for everyone and Lori was torn as to how Clarina would cope once Harlowe was ripped from her arms once more.
“Sacrifice heart, hope and love. The good and the fire will meet and the flames will expel all evil” Lori muttered under her breath as she watched the women ascend the grand staircase and away to Clarina’s room. And in that split second, everything made sense, Lori knew what she needed to do to.
