Tips for Moving House

Moving home is one of the most stressful times of your life. It is something I always hated before I found my (hopefully) forever home. It has been over 7 years since I last moved home, and I hope never to have to do it again. It was something I got quite good at arranging by the time of my last move. I had a system of sorts. It wasn’t always perfect, but it worked.

If moving home is something you dread, it pays to get as many tips and ideas as you can to help the process move along a bit more smoothly. If you have children, the last thing you need is to be last-minute packing and not know where everything is when you need it.

What tips do I have for you about moving house? They are pretty simple but effective and always worth remembering when the time comes to upsticks and relocate to new pastures.

Tips for Moving House.

Labels.

One of my main tips for moving house is to make sure you have labels for everything. When it is boxed up, you need to know what is in there and where it needs to go without having to open the box. Label your boxes as you go so you don’t forget what you have packed. If this isn’t something you have time to do yourself, look at hiring a company like Calgary packing and unpacking services to help you if you are unable to pack yourself due to physical limitations or time restraints.

Consider colour coding each room, too, to make boxes more identifiable when they are moved into your new home.

Declutter.

Use this time to declutter before packing things away. This is one of the perfect times to do this as you don’t want to be taking things you don’t need or use with you to your new home. Donate to charity shops, recycle or clear them out to the rubbish tip. The choice is yours, but view this time as the perfect chance to have a good clear out and reduce the amount you need to pack. A good tip is to contact a dumpster rental company, TX, so you have a dumpster on your property, making it easier to discard your rubbish or items you no longer want or need to take with you.

Plan Your Packing.

If you make a plan before packing, you can make sure you have a system that works for you and is easily manageable when the move arrives. Rooms with room or items you barely use first. Break the job down into sections so it isn’t all that overwhelming. Pack away ornaments and sentimental items that you don’t need to use first. Kid’s toys are also great to pack first, keeping a few favourites on hand for as long as possible.

Pack Room by Room.

Instead of flitting from room to room, try to complete a full room as much as possible so you know it is done and you don’t need to worry about revisiting. This isn’t always possible, but it is a big help if you can do it this way.

Pack Carefully.

This is a really important point for securing your belongings and reducing any damages. When packing your boxes, make sure they are not too heavy to cause the box to break during the moving process. Inside the box, try to fill as many gaps as possible with things like paper, bubble wrap, or even towels and blankets if you wish.

This will secure your items and give them the best chance of arriving at your new destination in one piece.

Pack an Essentials Box.

This could be different for everyone, but whatever is essential for you, pack it in a box and keep it with you. Include items you know you will need when in your new home right away or you need to have on hand, such as medications, a change of clothes for children or dummies, bottles, food, etc. If you need a cup of tea to help reduce stress, pack your kettle and mug in this box and make sure they stay with you so you can get to them when you need them.

I hope these tips help you out. I would love to hear your tips for moving house to make things go as smoothly as possible.

Great tips, moving is so stressful, I think I read somewhere that it’s like having a new baby, or getting a divorce

Very helpful, thank you. Moving is one of those things that always takes more time and more preparation than I expect.

I hate moving house. That said, I’ve moved 10 times now. I am 56, but it’s still a lot. I try to put a system in play when doing so, but there’s always a last minute panic.
