As you all know, I like to do as little as possible in my garden. I’m not very green fingered so I like to keep my garden clear and fuss-free and as low maintenance as possible. But that being said, I do still need to take care of it during the warmer weather and have it in shape for the end of the year.

I have some tools and equipment I rely on to help me out when the time comes. It may not be a full garden tool box, but I have everything I need to maintain my small garden and patio area so I can enjoy it over the summer.

I thought I would share my summer garden tips with you to help you stay on top of your garden too over the summer. Especially if it is low maintenance like mine is. Because anything that helps me keep on top of my outdoor space is a bonus in my books! Whether you have a beautiful full garden bursting with colour and amazing flowers or a minimalist garden requiring very little upkeep, like myself, it pays to know how to best keep on top of what you have in the best and most efficient way possible.

My Summer Garden Tips for a Low Maintenance Garden.

Keep it Clear.

The beauty of having a low maintenance garden is that there isn’t a lot to keep on top of, to begin with. Keep everything organised and limit how many ornaments and/or flowerbeds you may have to brighten up your space and stick to it. A low maintenance garden needs to be just that, low maintenance. So by limiting how much you have going on, you can keep it fairly easy to tend to depend on what you have.

Little and Often.

Keep on top of any gardening jobs you do have by doing them frequently. Putting them off only creates a bigger job and means more work overall in the end. So, weather depending, schedule some time each week/fortnight/month to tend to your outdoor space and make it look its best all summer long and not let standards dip because you have forgotten to take care of some small jobs.

As I have a small section of grass it takes me around 15 minutes to go over it with the lawnmower. The weeds do take a little bit longer but need doing less often. Where possible I try not to do it all in one go. Aside from it being too much for my back, it is much less daunting when you know you don’t need to spend all day in the garden.

Have the Correct Tools.

You need to make sure you have the correct tools for the jobs you need to do. I have a lawnmower, strimmer, brush and a wire brush to help me dig up the weeds in between the paving stones. By having what you need to hand you can make your jobs in the garden easier and quicker. As I have a small section of grass it takes me around 15 minutes to go over it with the lawnmower. Stick to What You Know.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it! This is one of my easier summer garden tips. But honestly, doing this will make sure your low maintenance garden is really easy to take care of. If you are like me and don’t know much about gardening, don’t be overfilling it with flowers or even a vegetable patch you aren’t sure how to take care of.

Instead, opt for some artificial plants and arrangements that will need very little care and attention. The same with grass. If you want to eliminate the fuss of taking care of a lawn, consider covering with artificial turf, bark or even stones to complete your low maintenance look and style.
