Have you seen the sun recently? It’s like this bright yellow thing and can be found in the bright blue sky above our heads. Yes, it is blue, not a murky cloudy grey, well not all the time anyway. Promise, I hope? Well it is Britain and we are well known for being short changed when it comes to having a good traditional summer with heat and dry days aren’t we!
Saying that last week, Wednesday to be precise, it was my niece’s 3rd birthday aww. We held it, like last year, in mum’s back garden or Casa Del Sue as it is affectionately known these days. Her garden is a sun trap that makes all sun worshipers turn green with envy. When the sun is out, with heat, she can be found on her recliner, Pepsi Max in hand following the sun around the garden. Before long we have all raided our collective freezers and popped round for a lil bbq. It would be rude not too, ‘coz god knows how long the sun will last for or even if it will show it’s face again.
Now my mum has a lovely garden. She has artificial turf, decking, stones, bbq, swing and some lovely furniture too boot. You can see why we all end up there can’t you. Me on the other hand. I have this ↓
Hmmmm………. well, what can I say! 4 years I have been in this house. 4 years. And it still looks like this! I am hanging my head in shame. Of course I have a lawnmower and when the grass dries out (hailstones seriously on Monday!) I will get on sorting the grass out. Every year I say I will do something with it. Every year. And every year I don’t. Ever the procrastinator. Sigh, what can I say. As we live on a main road with double yellow lines out front, the main function of the garden is to be able to park your car there, hence the tarmac area on the left. Which I used to do when I had a car. Garden Makeover Needed is a massive understatement!
Maybe I will finally get round to doing something with it, maybe it will stay as it is. The only thing I have successfully managed to do is to get rid of the nettles from the wall at the end of the garden, suppose that’s better than nothing isn’t it! With this in mind I have been perusing online at the things I can buy to make it a more appealing garden. What exactly would I like in my dream garden should the funds become available *heads off to buy lottery ticket* Well I would love a raised decking area. I would get rid of the rotary airer and and cover the grass to make my decking area. Obviously the grass would need levelling off first so it would be quite a big job. I would also love it to have a rail around the edge too to make it like a little terraced haven in my own back yard.
Of course you would need something to sit on as well and what better than some rattan garden furniture. My mum’s is lovely and we all chipped in to buy it for her a few years back but I really would love my own. Now if money was no issue, what I can dream can’t I, then I would go for something like this. I can totally see me hosting little get together’s around this gorgeous set. Or in reality just enjoying the sun eating in the garden with Olivia.
Maybe I should have a little fire pit or chimnea in there too for when it gets cold. I would also need lights out there too as it gets really dark and those little ones I have are just for decoration only, they look pretty but aren’t suitable for hosting people outside in the dark! Maybe some old fashioned lantern style ones and some lampposts, maybe 2, à la singing in the rain. Which is apt for the great British Summer washout we usually get isn’t it!
Below is a little ideas boards of things I would love to have in my dream garden. Some bright and funky accessories, those cushions please!!! Parasol, you know for just in case and of course the lights too. I would never be sat inside if I had all of these things in my garden as opposed to closing my eyes and imagining I’m not sat on my rickety old bench with my grass not dangerously out of control in front of my eyes!
What do you think? I’m sure if I put my mind, and finances to it I could transform my garden into a space I would be proud of couldn’t I. I would love some ideas/advice/offers to help me improve this wasted little space of mine, I just need a kick up the backside I think don’t I!
