Factors You Need To Consider Before You Get Engaged

You can feel it, can’t you? You can tell this is the one you want to spend the rest of your life with. After all, when you know it, you know it. That may be true, but you also need to be sure. Marriage is a big deal and a life-long commitment. While your emotions and instincts tell you to jump into it and pop that question (or respond to that question), your mind should guide you with some considerations. So, before you decide to get engaged, here are a few things you need first to consider.

Are you really in love?

Sure, you get those famous butterflies in your stomach when you’re with them. You feel a blush when they say your name, and you can’t stop thinking about them. But are you in love, lust or love? Or is it infatuation? How can you tell the difference? Lust is purely a sexual attraction, and like is more of a tender and fond feeling you have for someone. However, love brews healthy emotions of care, kindness, self-esteem, and the like. So, you need to be sure of what you’re feeling at the moment before you propose.

Are you ready for the long ride?

Marriage is a life-long journey (or it’s supposed to be). As cliche as that sounds, it’s true, and you need to be sure you’re ready before you take that step. Getting engaged is the closest crucial step towards marriage, and you should look for signs that show you’re ready. For example, have you ever thought about a future with them? Do those thoughts excite you? Do you trust each other? Do you bring out the best in each other? Ask and answer these questions beforehand.

What are your financial situations?

Some may argue that money shouldn’t keep you away from true love. It is vital to know about a person’s financial situation before you decide to marry them. There’s nothing wrong with asking them about it- and that can be quite an awkward and unromantic conversation. It is a practical step that will help you weigh your preparedness for a more profound commitment.

It is also good to consider your financial standing before you take the next step.

What do you do before you pop the question?

Before you pop the question, you might also want to consider getting a perfect ring that symbolizes your love and affection. A white gold Claddagh ring, for example, is a symbol of true love, loyalty, and friendship – values you should be willing to share with your partner.

It’s not a bad idea to have a conversation with the person and find out how they feel and their thoughts about marriage before you surprise them with a bent knee and a ring. However, it is advisable to determine how your partner thinks about you and the relationship before going ring-hunting. Be sure they are ready to take the next step in the relationship to avoid rejection.
