Creating a Functional Office Space at Home
I have been working from home for a few years now. Just me and my laptop and a diary/notebook and pen. I don’t need a lot of space and for a while, working on my knee on the sofa in front of the TV worked just fine. Until one day, it didn’t.
What Exactly Do I Do?
That’s the thing with working from home, isn’t it! People are never quite sure what it is you do. Or why you are not just simply ‘sitting on your laptop’ all day long. Because technically, I am on my laptop pretty much all day. Besides running my blog, I do some freelance copywriting and social media management as a Virtual Assistant. So yeah, I can be mistaken for not doing anything besides sitting at home on my laptop.
I get it when people ask if I am at work; they mean my day job. On my work at home days, I have to be quite specific and stress that yes, I am at home, but no, I am not available for lifts, shopping excursions or the like. It can be quite hard at times, but I think I am getting there.
But I digress, getting back on topic. I need some office space at home to create more of a working environment.

I don’t have a big house. It is a small two-bedroom house with no spare space. In the past few years, I have moved from behind the living room door – a dusty little corner that felt a lot like being punished to the corner of my kitchen now inhabited by a rather large Samsung American Style Fridge Freezer. The space’s fate as an office was sealed when a shelf literally fell on my head as I was working.
So I migrated upstairs. A little bit like birds flying south for the winter and tried to carve out a space to call my office in my bedroom. I tucked myself away in a corner with my desk, in the small but perfectly office spaced alcove to one end of the room. But then I decorated. Rearranging my room, suddenly I found the darker corner, despite its lamp, wasn’t where I wanted to be anymore.
Could I find space elsewhere in my room to house my office, or would I need to create an acoustic office space at home and separate my room somehow to create an entirely separate space?
My Bedroom Office
It turns no, I didn’t need to go that far. A smaller desk has since been put at the opposite end of my room to the alcove and sits directly next to my window. I can sit on my chair and stare out of the window under the guise of looking for inspiration.
Is it aesthetically pleasing and IG friendly? Not really. However, it is practical and gives me the space I need to feel like I am in a working space and not my bedroom.
With my stationery and prop cabinet behind me. A wall planner to keep me up to date with any plans fits in well with my room. And whilst I don’t do 100% of my writing and work at the desk, it does give me a base to head to when I need to focus and crack on with my working day from home.
A lot of people find that setting up a desk in their office is a fantastic way to ensure that they have everything that they need to hand. With this in mind, do not be afraid to look around for the best desk for your office by checking out a few online office furniture suppliers such as Office Monster online for example. There are some great desks out there and investing in one could help your home office to look the part.
I do have plans to update all my bedroom furniture. This includes flooring and wardrobes and my desk. I want to give it a more modern look and not the mismatched selection I have now. But that is something I can work towards when finances allow creating a duel functioning room that helps me get my work done and also get a peaceful nights sleep.
