5 tips and tricks for oily hair
One of the most common questions posed to our stylists at NUYU is how to combat oily hair. While you think you are doing yourself a favour by washing that hair every day, we have some surprises for you. We got together our top stylists and asked them to share the best hacks for beating problems of oily hair.
Don’t wash your hair every day.
It is hard to resist getting out of bed, showering, and giving your hair a good wash. However, washing every day will stimulate your hair’s production of oil. The more you wash away those natural oils, the more your hair will want to produce more. It will come to a point where you just can’t leave your hair for a day without washing, as it will look too oily.
There will be a time when you have to deal with your hair learning to cope with gaps between washing. Your scalp will need time to adjust to the new levels of oil naturally stored in the hair. Therefore, while you are training your head to lay off the grease, you will likely need to tie your hair back or wear that in-trend headband.
It will take a little while, but your patience will be rewarded. You will notice a massive difference to the oiliness of your hair quite naturally.
What you eat has an impact!

You are what you eat – and you could literally be greasing up your hair with each chip that you chew. Therefore, if you want to improve the health of your hair, you need to increase the health of your diet. Eating more fruit and veg each day will have a significant impact on your locks (and your skin and yoApple Cider
Apple cider is also a great way to keep your hair squeaky clean. Although brilliant in food, the idea here is to smooth it into your hair. If you already have some apple cider vinegar in your cupboard, you already have the perfect product for oily hair. You need to dilute the vinegar in water and pour it through your hair. You should leave it for a few minutes before rinsing through. If you don’t already have any, the good news is that it only costs a few pounds. There is no real need to spend a fortune on other specialist tonics when this
Shampoo and Conditioner Selection
You might be tempted to go for hair products that promise to heal your damaged hair. You might also pick up bottles with dry or soothing or glossy promises. In fact, these hair tonics do nothing to nourish the hair at its roots. Instead, the shampoo and conditioner will add a film to your hair, creating a masked effect. So, while they offer the look promised, it is a mere illusion, and the overall condition of your hair remains unchanged. Actually, the film could add to the proneness of your hair becoming oily.
Instead, you should opt for a purifying shampoo instead. This shampoo acts as a deep cleanser and will remove the excess oil build. Although more expensive, purifying shampoos only need to be used once a week alongside your preferred shampoo and conditioner. This routine will genuinely nourish the hair and give you a much healthier look.
Use Conditioner and Shampoo sparingly.
Hair is temperamental at times and likes to be treated just right. One of the most annoying ironies is that overuse of conditioners can decrease the overall condition of your hair. You should have your conditioner long after the shampoo bottle has emptied. You need only use conditioner sparingly and only on the ends of your hair. If you use your conditioner higher in your hair, as a way to detangle it, then you are asking for it to become oily faster. Use a brush to smooth the conditioner through the ends and leave the roots to take care of themselves.
You should also avoid the overuse of shampoo. Too much shampoo through the hair can make it feel heavy. Generally, you only need a blob about the size of a ten pence piece for the product to work. Two washes over a single heavy shampoo are much better for the condition of your hair.
The takeaway
You are going to have to get past the bad habit of over washing. However, if you still find your hair is oily, check out the best products for the job and use these sparingly.
