Mums – It’s Time to Focus on You!
As mums, we’re great at looking after everyone else- running around after our kids and partners and making sure everyone’s needs are met. But when it comes to ourselves, we’re almost always at the bottom of the priority list. Parents will always make sure their children are sorted ahead of themselves, it’s just the natural order of things- but it doesn’t mean you have to neglect yourself. You too are worthy, you have emotional needs that should be met and goals and ambitions that you should continue to work towards. In fact, to take the best care of others it makes sense that we ourselves need to be taken care of- so start thinking of yourself too. Here are some of the ways you can make a positive change in your life.
Get back into education
Education is now more accessible than ever. Gone are the days that you’d need to get qualifications to even apply, where you’d need to commit three or four years to full-time study. In today’s world, education can be flexible and work for just about anyone. Online courses can be done in your own time, from the comfort of your home. It might take some time but over the course of a number of years, you can gain yourself a qualification which can then be used to improve your career.
It could be anything from journalism to psychology to animal studies online, have a think about your interests and the job you eventually want. Look at different online colleges and universities and find a course and a payment plan that suits you. Even if you can only dedicate two hours a week to it, you’ll get there eventually. By the time your kids are a bit older and you’re ready to return to full-time work, you’ll be able to apply for better jobs.
Start a home business
Working around having a family is difficult. Even part-time jobs will have set hours, and as a mum, you’ll know how your days can sometimes be. If your child is unwell, has an appointment to attend or anything else then they’re always going to be the priority. However, there are ways you can earn around raising kids, and one way is to start your own home business. Since you don’t need to leave the house it’s very flexible and as you’re the boss, you get to call the shots.
You could buy and sell things for a profit, you could turn a craft you have into a business or you could get into blogging or freelancing. Have a think about what your skills are and what you’d like to do and get it set up, any extra money you can earn around your kids is no bad thing. It will also help you to gain more skills which are useful if you want to start a new career later down the line.
Take up a new hobby
Hobbies are important for people of all ages, and as a mum, your hobbies can keep you sane. They allow you to meet new people, build your skills and have fun. They break up your routine and give you something to do that’s just for you. You could join a local class or look at hobbies you can start at home. Even if it’s from home, chances are there are Facebook groups, forums and other social activities you can join in with.
Focus on health
Our bodies change when we have children and that’s fine- you don’t need to look like a supermodel to be happy and confident! However, if you’ve neglected yourself as late, or never did get back to where you want to be after having your children then now is the time to focus on you. Come up with tasty, healthy recipes the whole family can enjoy. Join a gym, some even have creche areas so mums can workout without the need to arrange childcare.
Otherwise, you could exercise at home, following home workout videos, jumping on a trampette, skipping rope or using a piece of exercise equipment you’ve bought. You’ll have more energy, feel more confident and be healthier overall which is always a good thing when you have children relying on you.
