Family Fitness Fun

I am upping up the ante on my getting fit kick and I am determined to run at least 3 times a week for a minimum of 15 mins each time. I know it’s not much but hey ho, 15 mins outside is better than 15 on the sofa am I right!

The thing is (as you are all probably aware) I am a single mum with non-standard work hours so what do you do? I’m not a fan of palming her off to do things as she puts up with a lot of messing so I can go to work. I have written before about taking Olivia with me, it get us both out the house. She usually goes along on her scooter but gets bored easily.

Yesterday I really wanted to go out in the evening as it was such a beautiful day I wasn’t up for running whilst it was still so warm so I waited for it to cool a little before we went. I left it too long and it rained!
But we persevered and waited a little longer and we geared up for our first mum daughter run together!

How cute does she look!

We each had a bottle of water, her an ipod, me my phone, headphones in and off we went. We are luckily enough to live close to a park with excellent running areas and added fitness equipment which is free to use!

I was a bit apprehensive as I was unsure if I was doing the right thing, would people approve, would they call me a bad mum for taking her out with me? I have never really seen other people doing it before, but as long as she was having fun I wouldn’t force her to run if she didn’t want to or for longer than she wanted to. I also promised to take her to the park to play on the swings.
She loved it and people seemed to love the fact that we were running together, lots of smiles and aahhs as we went past I was obviously worrying for nothing, unless they were just laughing at my red face who knows!
It looks like this could be the start of another activity we can do together from now on as extra to my own fitness plan, I look forward to seeing how long she will love running with me and if it could be the start of a whole new hobby for her it would be great if it was, something we can share. London Marathon anyone…….

Do you do any activities with your children? Would you do what I have done or do you have any other suggestions of fun things we can do together to keep fit?

I think it's great you took her out with you, too many people would just let their children sit at home and if she wants to go out with you do it. Start the good habits now and if you have fun then even better #activefamily

I think it's fantastic you went together. I spotted a mum and her daughter running just this week and thought that it was a super idea and how lovely that they could do it as a team effort!

Have you got a ParkRun scheme near you? Lots of families join in once a week, you can run 2.5 or 5K – great fun! #ActiveFamily

Tracey this is utterly fantastic i would love for my daughter (age 13) to come with me but unfortunately she is at the stage of 'mum is so embarrassing' I think encouraging our children to be fit and healthy is amazing!

She sounds like a very busy girl! Running is such a good way to get fit even though I'm new to it and not very good at it
