Will My Diamond Lose its Sparkle?

“A diamond is just a lump of coal that stuck to its job.”

– Leonardo do Vinci

While this statement certainly represents a bit of tongue-in-cheek humour, we are all well aware of the lure which diamonds possess. This is largely due to their ability to reflect light in a manner unlike any other precious stone in existence.

However, what if you awoke one morning only to discover that your diamond had lost its sparkle? Is this a realistic fear? Why might a diamond become a bit dull over time? Let’s take a look at both of these questions so that you can learn how to keep your stone just as beautiful as the day when it left the jewelry store.

Can Diamonds Lose Their Inherent Shine?

This myth has been circulating for some time, and it deserves closer attention. The first takeaway point here is that diamonds will not lose their sparkle due to changes in the structure, such as clouding or increasing flaws. Instead, as the website Jewelry Secrets notes, the main reason that diamonds might appear less lustrous than in the past is primarily involved with surface dirt and grime.

If the surface of your stone is not cared for properly, it will naturally appear slightly cloudy (although the underlying structure itself is unchanged. Similarly (and unlike some other stones), diamonds will not suffer from any oxidation or discolouring if they are subjected to a great deal of sun.

How Can a Diamond be Cleaned?

The next logical question involves why it is important to care for your stone regularly. As the sparkle of any stone directly results from its interaction with light and the associated cut, keeping all facets in pristine condition is important. Take a look at an A CUT ABOVE 2 carat diamond to appreciate what a truly scintillating stone can offer. These diamonds are cut for ultimate precision and thus – the best possible light return and sparkle.

Thankfully, all that will normally be required is a bowl of warm water and standard dishwashing soap. This soap will help break up any grease, oils and dirt that may be present on its surface. Next, wipe your diamond with a soft cloth (such as a terry cloth) and allow it to dry. You can repeat this process if necessary. Above all, never use any harsh chemical cleanser on the diamond. These compounds may damage the stone as well as the surrounding jewelry.

If you find that your diamond is still failing to shine properly, it is a good idea to bring it to a professional jeweler. He or she will use specialized techniques such as ultrasound that can address areas that may have been missed with home-based methods.

Shine Bright Like a Diamond

The sparkle of a diamond can last more than a lifetime if it gives a bit of tender loving care from time to time. This precious stone will return to its former glory, and once again, you can be sure to turn heads while out and about.
