Why Hiring A Removal Company is A Great Idea
These days, I feel like my moving home journey may be behind me. I am in a home I love and have been for quite a few years now. It is definitely our home now, not just a house. Seven years down the line, though we have made changes, there are things we would like to improve, but I still love living here. That being said, I can still remember moving in, and for the first time, I used a removal company instead of hiring a van and doing it all with the help of family and friends. I really wished I was able to hire a removal company at the time.
It was definitely the best option for me.
During the week before the move, I had to pack up my old flat and work my full-time job, look after Olivia, and fully decorate my new home from top to bottom. If I am frank, it was a lifesaver, and I loved that the company I used also offered a dismantling and refitting service for all of my flat-pack furniture.
It eased a lot of the worry and stress, and I was set up in my new home much quicker than I would have been otherwise. It was a great compromise, considering I couldn’t hire a removal company.
Granted, this service can come at a cost, but for parents or people who aren’t physically able to do this, hiring a removal company can make moving home easier and less stressful. I would always advise that you look around as much as you can to hire the best company for your needs.
Ask for references from friends or family or the company’s previous customers. Do they have any online reviews or testimonials you can look at? It pays to do your homework, especially when they are essentially handling your home.
Speed and Efficiency

We used one when moving a relative into a first-floor flat. We’d never have gotten the furniture up the stairs by ourselves, not without damaging the stairwell, her belongings and us! She was also living on a narrow street with no parking; accessing the van would have just been another worry for us. I use a removal company every time. Firstly packing with children is hard work. A team of removals can have all our belongings in the lorry in a day. It also means that when you get to the new house, you’re able to spend time with the kids helping them adjust to their new room knowing the rest of the house is being taken off the lorry!
My tips are:
- Pack a weekend bag for everyone to make sure you all have clothes/pj’s and bedding for 2 days or so without having to open any boxes. Make a brew kit that includes tea/coffee/snacks/hot chocolate etc.
- Make sure all those bags are in the car before removals turn up! (Barring the kettle- removals do appreciate a cuppa or 3! )
- Order a food delivery for late in the day you move in.
- Make sure the fridge is one of the first things in the new house. Just make sure your house is organised before removals turn up- they will pack things where they find them, so if you’ve got a stray cup in the bedroom, it will end up packed with your bedding. Lycra Widow
We opted for a removal company as we were relocating from Cambridgeshire to south-west Wales, it was a two-day move, so they loaded from our old house on Tuesday. Then, our stuff stayed on the truck overnight, and they met us on Wednesday at our new house (our removal lorry did break down, so our stuff didn’t arrive until Wednesday night). Physical Limitations
We used a removal company as our family, or we were physically up to the task of shifting what we had to move. They were so quick and made light work of it. I read you should get at least 3 quotes. Insist on a visual estimate as you may be able to reduce the price once they physically see what you have rather than basing it on the number of rooms. Gorgeous George’s Mama

We’ve done lots of large international moves to / from the US, UK and Middle East, and had to use removals companies for them. Unfortunately apart from one time we had problems with each move: items broken, going missing, or destroyed beyond repair. Each time this happened we had to fight with the removal company to get reimbursement, and each time we never got back the full replacement cost of the missing / damaged items. The companies we used were large supposedly reputable companies, but we still had bad experiences. They lied about items, saying they were already damaged, or that they were not in the inventory (they are deliberately vague on the inventory list to cover themselves).
The only thing that saved us from a big loss was having our own insurance cover for the move. Firstly this meant our insurance company fought on our behalf with the removal firm’s insurers to get a better payout. Secondly, we then got payment from out insurers for items not covered by the removal firm insurers.
