These days, I feel like my moving home journey may be behind me. I am in a home I love and have been for quite a few years now. It is definitely our home now not just a house. Seven years down the line, though we have made changes, there are things we would like to improve but I still love living here. That being said, I can still remember moving in and for the first time, I used a removal company instead of hiring a van and doing it all with the help of family and friends.
It was definitely the best option for me.
During the week before the move, I not only had to pack up my old flat but also work my full-time job, look after Olivia and fully decorate my new home from top to bottom. If I am completely honest it was a lifesaver and I loved that the company I used also offered a dismantling and refitting service for all of my flat pack furniture too. It eased a lot of the worry and stress and I was set up in my new home a lot quicker than I would have been otherwise.
Granted, this service can come at a cost, but for parents or people who aren’t physically able to do this, hiring a removal company can make moving home an easier and less stressful task. I would always advise that you look around as much as you can to hire the best company for your needs. Ask for references from friends or family or the companies previous customers. Do they have any online reviews or testimonials you can look at? It pays to do your homework especially when they are essentially handling your home.
But don’t just take my word for it, I asked some fellow bloggers to share their experiences on moving home using a removal company too.
Speed and Efficiency
We moved in December and it was the first time we used a removal company. Moving is usually stressful but this time it was really easy! I felt a bit useless because the removal men were amazing and took care of everything. I don’t plan to move again but I would definitely recommend using a removal company! Living the Harmon Life
We used a removals company when moving in December as we had a newborn baby and a toddler. The removals company made it so much easier and stress-free so that I could focus on the children and unpacking. Two Cherries Blog
We used a removal company despite moving within the same street. If you’re selling, you need to have everything out of your house when you complete and I don’t think we’d have managed it alone. Business for Mums
I’ve moved myself before and with a removal company. I much preferred the removal company as I could relax and unpack the following day without being shattered after lifting and carrying everything! Just Average Jen
I used a removal company because I knew if anything was broken, they would pay for it and not me. Household Money Saving
We used one when moving a relative into a first floor flat. We’d never have gotten the furniture up the stairs by ourselves, not without damaging the stairwell, her belongings and us! She was also living on a narrow street with no parking, accessing the van would have just been another worry for us. As it was, using a removals company made it effortless; no parking concerns, no trying to juggle sofas on stairwells… we just sat back and enjoyed the move! Devon Mama
We moved with a 2-year-old were so glad to not have to worry about carrying things up and down the stairs or packing it into a van. We could just concentrate on the organisation and looking after our little one without the hassle! Happy Family Hub
I use a removal company every time. Firstly packing with children is hard work. A team of removals can have all our belongings in the lorry in a day. It also means that when you get to the new house you’re able to spend time with the kids helping them adjust to their new room knowing the rest of the house is being taken off the lorry!
My tips are:
- Pack a weekend bag for everyone to make sure you all have clothes/pj’s and bedding for 2 days or so without having to open any boxes. Make a brew kit that includes tea/coffee/snacks/hot chocolate etc.
- Make sure all those bags are in the car before removals turn up! (Barring the kettle- removals do appreciate a cuppa or 3! )
- Order a food delivery for late in the day you move in.
- Make sure the fridge is one of the first things in the new house. Just make sure your house is organised before removals turn up- they will pack things where they find them, so if you’ve got a stray cup in the bedroom it will end up packed with your bedding. Lycra Widow
We opted for a removal company as we were relocating from Cambridgeshire to south-west Wales, it was a two day move so they loaded from our old house on the Tuesday and then our stuff stayed on the truck overnight and they met us on the Wednesday at our new house (our removal lorry did break down so our stuff didn’t arrive until the Wednesday night). We used a removal company as neither we or our families are physically up to the task of shifting what we had to move. They were so quick and made light work of it. I read you should get at least 3 quotes. And insist on a visual estimate as you may be able to get the price reduced once they physically see what you have rather than basing it on the number of rooms. Gorgeous George’s Mama
