5 tip top tips for travelling with young children

As much as we love them, there’s no denying that children can be hard work.

So when you’ve made the decision to treat your little ones to a getaway, there’s every chance you might be feeling slightly on edge.

To ease your worries, here are five tip-top tips for travelling with young children.

  1. Talk about the trip

As fun as a holiday can be, it’s a major break from routine and if there’s one thing children like, it’s routine. In the run-up to your getaway, it’s therefore important that you talk about the trip with them as much as possible.

You should chat about all aspects of the holiday – the airport, the flight, the destination, so your children know what to expect and will find it easier to adapt to their new routine.

  1. Take a tablet

When it comes to keeping your children entertained during your trip, a tablet is your best friend.

You can load it with games, books and episodes of their favourite TV shows, then sit back in delight as they’re occupied for hours on end.

If you’re worried about them becoming a little bit too tech-obsessed during your travels, simply install a parental control app that lets you put a limit on their screen time.

  1. Pack plenty of snacks

Dealing with a hungry child is one of the biggest challenges a parent can face. And when you’re travelling, you’re never quite sure when the time between meals will be extended (due to delayed flights, traffic, or activities overrunning). So make sure you pack plenty of snacks to keep your kiddies energised and on side.

Remember, it’s not just children who get irritable when they’re hungry, so don’t forget to pack some snacks for yourself too.

  1. Drive to the airport

Public transport is fine for little day trips, however, when you’re carrying heavy luggage and have excitable children in tow, it’s the last thing you need. So drive to the airport instead – your kiddies will be far more comfortable buckled up in their familiar family vehicle.

To cut down the costs, it’s well worth pre-booking your airport parking too. Parking site Looking4.com has early bird deals for global hubs from Sydney to Stansted. With your parking booked, you’ll have one less travel task to worry about.

  1. Stay at an apartment

When you’re travelling with young children, consider staying at a holiday apartment. They’re more homely and spacious than pokey hotel rooms and often work out cheaper too.

Plus, you’ll have cooking facilities, which is ideal if your children are fussy eaters or you don’t want to eat out all the time.

If this sounds good, check out holiday rental site Airbnb – it has loads of great properties.

Travelling with young children is always going to pose challenges. However, if you plan ahead and follow our five savvy tips, you’ll be able to enjoy a fantastic family holiday.
