Review and Competition The School for Good and Evil

Recently I was asked to review, with Olivia, the first two books of Soman Chainani’s The School for Good and Evil series.

1.1.1 *Disclaimer* I was sent copies of these books to review but all thoughts and opinions are my own and Olivia’s.

Having never heard of them before I was intrigued to have a look and see if this would be something that would appeal to Olivia as it is aimed at her age range and into the YA demographic. It is definitely my kind of book, being a fan of Twilight Saga, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and anything to do with princes, princesses and I really want Olivia to try reading these so I can share them with her too.

The School for Good and Evil starts in Gavaldon with Sophie and Agatha. Two friends who are completely different, with Sophie dreaming of being a princess and Agatha having different ideas of how her life is going to pan out.

Every 4 years in Gavaldon two children are stolen away, never to return and taken to the school for good and evil and this is Sophie’s dream. She is positive she is going to be a princess. But when the time comes is she going to get her dream?

I gave this to Olivia to read but I think maybe it was a bit too advanced and long for her so I read it and told her about the story myself as I know she would love it. My niece, however, has started to read it and is so far enjoying it!

I found it to be a great ride through an alternative fairy tale story with many unexpected twists and turns. It was funny in parts as well like when both girls are transformed into hobgoblins and end up fighting each other!

It wouldn’t be a fairy tale without a prince and this takes the form of Tedros the son of King Arthur who is looking for his true love at the school for good but who will it be? Sophie, Agatha or maybe Beatrix?

The description is really what brings this book alive. You get to imagine exactly how magical the school for good is, yet how completely disgusting it must be to be stuck in the school for evil.

Throughout you see Agatha struggling to get Sophie to help her return home whilst all Sophie wants to do is get her prince and live happily ever after, but is there a way home? No one has ever managed it before! The riddle is

Once the girls realise this they are transported back home to Gavaldon but is it what they both actually wanted? I’m not ashamed to say I actually shed a little tear here the sucker that I am for a happy ever after.
The School for Good and Evil: A World Without Princes takes us to the girls living life away from the schools and Agatha is struggling with life without Tedros and makes a wish hat sends the girls back to the Schools they managed to escape from only to find it has is there a war brewing between the school for boys and the school for girls and will there be a happy ever after for anyone?

I can’t wait to find out exactly what is going and I am sure you will all be waiting with bated breath to find out when I post my review. But….. in the meantime have a look at the trailer
