Mother’s Day Gift Guide 2023

In case you didn’t know, Mother’s Day this year falls on the 19th of March. This is precisely 2 days after one of my sister’s birthdays and 2 days before Olivia’s birthday. I have documented my woes of our family’s birthday season many times, and every year it gets worse and harder, and I am always stuck for inspiration.

This is especially true for Mother’s Day. And with my mum’s birthday pretty much one month later, it’s double the gifts in a short space of time. My mum FYI is really hard to buy for. Most years, we all chip in together to buy a bigger, more expensive gift from the four of us instead of collectively struggling to find something to buy. This year, I am riding high on the success of buying my mum a pair of boots that didn’t need to be returned! (all clothing and shoes get returned due to sizing issues, and we always give them with receipts so she can exchange them. At this point, it’s simply for something to give). How I will top this miracle, I do not know.

With this in mind, I have put together a Mother’s gift guide to help you with some ideas for the big day and highlight some great brands.

Once A Mother, Always A Mother

There is always a lot of discussion around parenting, and when it comes to mums, the conversation is generally focused on those tough early years. The sleepless nights, the terrible twos, and the fun potty training. The general consensus is that you have more of a grip on life once the kids get older. As the parent (as my number is saved in her phone as) of nearly a 17-year-old, our relationship and indeed being a mum is a lot different than it was even 5 years ago. And I don’t think enough attention is given to how family dynamics change once this happens.

Once A Mother, Always A Mother, published by Ortus Press, RRP £11.99, is an honest look at how relationships change and what being a mother to older children and adult children means, something which I can really relate to not just as a mum but as a daughter too. I genuinely think my relationship with my mum is better now that I am in my 40s, and my relationship with Olivia is better than a few years ago. This book is ideal for those mums who are adjusting to parenting entirely differently than they are used to.

Agnes Arber Gin

My ideal Mother’s Day gift (aside from an all-expenses paid trip to Disneyland Paris) is gin. I love finding new and different gins to try out, and while I enjoy an excellent flavoured gin, I am partial to a good London Dry. I am one of those people who thought I hated gin, but in reality, it was the tonic I couldn’t take (sorry to the purists). So I consume mine with Lemonade.

The Copenhagen Company

Who doesn’t love a candle? As cliche as it is – candles are the female version of slippers and socks for dads! Candles are always a hit in our family. And we love finding new and different brands and experiencing the fragrances offered in candles. 

The Copenhagen Company is a family-run luxury home fragrance company who have been supplying companies with fragrances since 1999. You can shop candles, diffusers and room sprays in scents such as Amber and Vanilla, Pink Peony, Seabreeze and White Camellia, to name a few. All products are ethical and sustainable, as well as vegan and cruelty-free. So not only do they smell amazing and are pretty to look at, but they are also good for the environment too. What’s not to love?

Featured is the Pink Peony candle, £12.99, which not only has the nicest design I have seen on a candle glass but smells divine, I have been assured (no sense of smell here).

I have reviewed some past products from Arran Sense of Scotland, and honestly, they were amazing. As you all know, I have no sense of smell, but I could actually catch a whiff of the fragrances of some products, and it reminded me of a fresh outdoor scent, if I remember rightly. 

The Arran Sense of Scotland ethos is about connecting you with nature and improving your emotional and physical well-being. All products are crafted and manufactured on Arran. Now, this is something that will make an extra special gift for any mum. I am a huge fan of gifting experiences, which we frequently do as a family. There are so many gift experiences to choose from, and this afternoon tea provides a classic British day out with a twist.
