How to Raise a Resilient Child

Resilience is key in a number of situations – from giving your child the chance to make their own decisions, solving their own problems and building their understanding of peer pressure, taking risks now and then and having fun.

These things are key for a child’s development of their life skills and enjoyment, as well as knowing how to manage their own limits. Here in this guide, we take a look at some tips to help raise a child teeming with resilience skills.

Encourage your child to explore different activities

Schools have so many different activities for students to take advantage of. From extracurricular activities to music lessons, sports, afternoon clubs and independent projects. This is the best environment for children to learn about how to be resilient through the many different benefits of managing different tasks, handling new challenges and the potential for your child to make new friends and communicate.

From home, you can motivate your child to find their passions and key interests to find out which hobbies your child will pick up on a regular basis. Whether this is inside or outside of school, your child will find a lot of benefits from picking up hobbies.

Give your child responsibilities

From picking up a regular set of chores around the home to helping you with the grocery shopping, giving them random tasks to pick up and trusting their independence. They can get a lot out of owning specific tasks in the house and enjoying them, getting used to what is being asked of them and so much more. It also means you can trust your child with new responsibilities and handling of tasks you may have not given them before.

Give your child that level of trust

What can be holding a child back is their reliance on you as the parent. Ideally, you should only be intervening when it’s necessary – which should be only when your child looks visibly unsure or upset. Part of building a child’s resilience is in watching them be capable of handling what comes their way. From toddler age, you can easily do this by giving your child the time to figure out what’s happening and what they need to do next.

Resilience is a lifelong process and can be channelled through your child at a young age. Use your intuition and trust to see your child do the best they can through the things they enjoy and appreciate. And over time your child will naturally exude resilience – a great life skill to master.

`Basically don’t be a helicopter parents, haha. On a serious note, you should let your child fall and get back up on their wrong. Let them know that failure is not final and neither is success for all that matters. Life is a learning experience. Your kids can only learn through their mistakes. if we do everything for them and limit them on what they can do then they will never be independent or resilient.
