How to Deal With More Stuff in Your Home Than You Can Manage

No matter how much effort is made to prevent it, all households accumulate more belongings than they need – it’s simply a byproduct of living. This is especially the case if you have a large family, pets, and plenty of hobbies; stuff just fills every available space without you realising it.

While this is manageable most of the time with weekly cleans, it always gets to a point where there’s just too much to manage. Things are piling up in the corners of every room and on all the surfaces, and the drawers and cupboards are overflowing with years’ worth of buildup.

It can be tough to know where to start with tackling it, but so long as you take a systematic approach, you’ll get there. In this article, you’ll learn the fundamental steps you need to be able to reestablish order.

Assessing the Situation

It’s a good idea to first evaluate the situation as a whole before you tackle every room. Identify which areas of the house are the messiest, and note down what sort of items represent the main offenders. You’ll inevitably find that while there’s general clutter everywhere, certain parts of the house seem to be particularly troublesome, no matter how much effort you make to keep them tidy.

Tackling One Area at a Time

You never want to take on too much at once, as you’ll just find yourself overwhelmed. Instead, take a look at your notes and go for the worst room first. The rationale behind doing this is that once you’ve cleared this space, the most difficult part will be behind you, and you’ll find the rest much easier.

To start, get yourself three large, strong cardboard boxes and label them appropriately for stuff you want to keep, donate or sell, and throw away or recycle. From here, you can simply organize the room piece by piece, repeating the process when you fill the boxes. You’ll get into a rhythm before long!

Utilising Self-Storage

You may find that your issues in some rooms have less to do with having too much stuff and more to do with having too little space. In this situation, self storage is a great option.

Using a self-storage facility allows you to safely and securely store the larger items that you want to keep but simply don’t have enough room for. Most offer reasonable payment plans, enabling you to keep your stuff for as long as you like while you figure out what to do with it.

These units can even be a help just for the short term to give you space while you declutter – you can put the big items in storage while you get the rest of the room sorted.

Wrapping Up

Hopefully, you now feel a little clearer about how to tackle all that mess. A clear home makes for a clear head, so sort things out properly and you’re sure to not only have a more pleasant place to live, but also better mental health.
