We recently watched our first ever women’s football match. It was a new experience for us and beforehand we didn’t really know what to expect. The UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 Tournament is in full swing and as of writing this post, the Women’s England team is preparing to take on France in the quarter finals. The McDonald’s Grassroots Football Programme are proud supporters of the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 Tournament.
What Is McDonald’s Grassroots Football Programme?
The McDonald’s Grassroots Football Programme makes football available to everyone at a community level. Regardless of age, gender, disability, the programme is there to encourage everyone to get involved and give those who may not have otherwise been able to, the chance to play the sport and learn new skills.
It’s this motto that led to the sponsoring the UEFA Women’s EURO 2017 Tournament as a great way to promote inclusivity in the sport.
Watching The Match.
Despite having played football when she was younger Olivia hasn’t really shown an interest in football of late. I was hoping that by watching a women’s match she would be more inspired. She was absolutely more impressed by their professionalism compared to their male counterparts.
We also discussed how she felt seeing women in a role mostly portrayed by men in the media. Football isn’t just for boys these days and I could see the cogs ticking over in her brain. It’s safe to say these women are not only excellent on the pitch but amazing role models for young girls too.
But the question still remained….. would Olivia be inspired to try football again after seeing how successful these women are in the sport?
It took less than 24 hours for her to want to try her hand at scoring a goal. Upon coming across a virtual goal whilst out and about this weekend Olivia was itching to try her hand at scoring and placed herself in the line. Not surprisingly made up of young boys and men.
With 5 shots on target, Olivia hit her first 3 no problem. But the ever growing queue behind put her off somewhat and she missed the last 2!
Has Olivia Been Inspired to Take Up Football?
Watch this space! It takes Olivia a while to realise she wants to do something and start doing it. But we will be making regular trips to our local park to watch the kids teams. Both boys only and girls only along with mixed teams to see if this inspires her somewhat. But knowing that there is the McDonald’s Grassroots Programme to help get her playing should she decide to is a big help.
Do you have girls who love to play football? Or are you a fan of women’s football? I would love to hear more especially if you have played in one of McDonald’s Community Football days or taken part in a coaching session.
