Energy-efficient home decor: 5 ways to decorate your home and save on bills

With the rising cost of living encouraging people to look at ways they can curb costs on their outgoings, many don’t realise they can save money by making alterations to their home decorations. Since energy-efficient home decor is a great hack for saving money on bills, we’ve come up with 5 ways to decorate your home and keep costs down.

  1. Install fitted furniture away from radiators

Moving large pieces of furniture away from the radiator will let heat flow more effectively around the room – meaning you won’t need to spend as much heating up your home. Instead, make the most of awkward nooks and crannies by adding fitted furniture like wardrobes in there, and do more with the space you already have available in your house.

  1. Add thermal curtains

Just like how your winter coat holds in warmth, thermal (or insulated) curtains also hold heat in your home. They’re made of a thicker and more insulated fabric than ordinary drapes and can help insulate walls and windows where draughts easily make their way in.

  1. Replace regular light bulbs with energy-efficient LED alternatives

Changing your regular lightbulbs with LED alternatives can save you nearly £1,000 a year. These incredible LED bulbs use at least 75% less energy than their ordinary counterparts and help you save a massive amount on your energy bill. You can buy these energy-efficient alternatives online or in most UK DIY and homeware stores.

  1. Decorate the floor with thick rugs to lose less heating

While insulated floors can help you retain warmth (and retain cash in your wallet) laying down carpet can be expensive. Instead, keep in the 10% of the heat that you usually lose via your floors by incorporating rugs into your décor. Not only will they help keep your room warm, but they’ll also make the space feel a lot cosier in the winter months as well.

  1. Add blankets and throws

A quick way to add an extra layer of warmth, bringing more blankets and throws into your home can be a cosier way to beat the chills. Searches on Google for blankets were up 22% in the last month, while over 40,500 Brits are now searching for blankets online each month as we go further into winter. Pro tip: thicker blankets made from wool or cotton fleece fare better in the colder periods for those looking to save the pennies.

It can be daunting to think about the cost of prices shooting up and what this will mean for yourself and your family. And while it might not seem like updating some home decor will have much of an effect on your coin purse, these tips can do more than you might initially think.

I need to invest in thermal curtains!! I have considered everything else with some thing working better than others for us. For example we do make sure nothing is obscuring our radiators and we have plenty of blankets to keep us warm. But sadly we can’t have a big thick rug because our kids likes to spill things on them, haha.

I hadn’t realised quite how much energy LED lightbulbs save!
