What is your go-to protein option when working out? Shake, bar, snack or a good old chicken breast? It’s safe to say there are quite a few different options available for your pre or post workout protein hit these days. Personally, I have had shakes and chocolate bars but this post is all about finding out how effective protein cookies are.
I have been testing out the Sci Mx Pro 2go Double Choc Chip Protein Cookies and the PhD Pro-Oat Cookie to see how they perform after one of my home HIIT workouts.
How Effective Are Protein Cookies?
I think we can all agree that some protein bars lack taste and are quite hard to eat. Some I have tried in the past have been lacking in this department and if you struggle to eat it, it can’t be doing much good in my opinion!
Taste wise, both of these cookies were actually edible. I preferred the texture and flavour of the PhD Oat Cookie. I found it more enjoyable and not really so hard to eat. Whilst I did enjoy the flavour of the choc chip cookie from Sci Mx it was a bit more on the chewy side and lacked that chocolatey flavour I wanted to find. That’ll be the chocoholic in me. But on the whole, I was pleasantly surprised by how much they both resembled actual cookies! Most definitely the way to keep a chocoholic like me on the straight and narrow after a workout, that’s for sure.
I have tried these out a few different times now. Before and after a workout and in lieu of breakfast rushing out on my way to work. Iknow, I know but they were just there on the table and I was running late!
Still, I prefer the flavour of the oat cookie. I found that really that was the only difference. Both gave a great boost pre workout for when I don’t want breakfast first (yes I can eat as soon as I open my eyes and chocolate is always a winner first thing!) but feel I need something to help me power through.
The same for after the workout. Sometimes I like to leave it until not long before I go to bed. I find it helps me sleep better but I also get really hungry. For example; when I get home from work, I am ravenous. So I make myself and Olivia some dinner around 6 pm. Then around 7.30/8pm, I decide to do a late workout. After this, I have worked up an appetite and find myself wanting to snack. These cookies fitted into this slot nicely and helped to tide me over till morning.
Having them for breakfast? I do a physically demanding job. Working in a shop and having to be constantly on the go and carrying heavy bags of stock around needs me to be at my best. I have to admit, I actually managed to go to lunchtime on one of these cookies. However, I don’t recommend you substitute a regular breakfast for a cookie but I thought I would mention it just to prove how effective it was.
