It’s time to talk Christmas. Specifically, how do you decorate your Xmas tree? Last year we changed our style. It was long overdue and for too many years we put up with mediocre artificial trees and sub-par decorations. There was no love or thought involved and it was one of my most hated jobs. I really wasn’t the best Xmas tree decorator at all!
Then last year we redecorated our front room in November and suddenly our old tree and decorations were outdated and completely wrong. Gone was the black and gold wallpaper and in was the light bright pastels and white and grey wallpaper. Our green tree and red and gold decorations just wouldn’t cut it. It was time to go out and refresh our Christmas look.
Changing our Look.
First up a new tree was needed. I had no idea what I wanted except I really had my heart set on a pre-lit tree. Ultimately, I didn’t one. Homebase had the most gorgeous snow tipped 7ft artificial tree on offer early November for £30. I just couldn’t not really, could I? So on the spur of the moment and the tap of a finger, I ordered us a new tree as I headed out for my lunch at work.
Next up was the big question…….
How Do You Decorate Your Xmas Tree?
After shopping around and taking weeks to finally decide on what we wanted we came up with a new colour scheme and bought ourselves a whole new set of decorations so I thought I would share with you my process behind picking our Xmas decorations.
- Pick a colour scheme – Be it traditional red and gold, a riot of colour or homemade all the way. The choice is yours and in this day and anything goes. But whatever you pick, stick with it. Don’t deviate and make it a jumble of all kinds of different things. Make a statement if you want. We will be going with pastel colours again this year and it will be the girliest theme around!
- Match all your lights – I learnt this the hard way one year when I didn’t check. Fairy lights come in all different sizes and colours. We opted for purple and green to go with our pastel colour scheme. But whatever you choose, make sure they match.
- Choose your decorations – There are so many different styles of decorations this year. You don’t have to opt for just round baubles these days. We have some glass baubles with snow effect on them which light up, a unicorn, princess dress to name a few. If you need some inspiration check out the gorgeous range at Cox & Cox for that little something special to adorn your tree this year.
- Make it pop! – Now I have all my different lights and decorations, it’s time to decorate that tree and have fun! The tree will be up for at least 24 days so I make it something I enjoy to look at.
To Tinsel or Not to Tinsel?
We are strictly a no tinsel on the tree kind of family but that doesn’t mean I don’t have it elsewhere in the house. Our staircase gets wrapped in tinsel, colours to match the tree and we have a gorgeous new bauble wreath in our colours to hang on our door this year.
Our walls have twinkling snowflakes on them in the front room as well as wall hanging decorations to bring the whole room together. With the addition of a new fireplace for this Christmas, we will be looking for something special to feature there too. It’s safe to say we will be going all out this year and I can’t wait to get started!
So now you know how I do mine, how do you decorate your Xmas tree?
