Can’t Stop Smoking? Here are Healthier Alternatives

No one can refute that smoking is one of the most harmful activities you can do. It harms the body, imbalances the mind, and pollutes the environment. Other than a momentary pleasure accompanied by a lifetime of addiction, it has no positive traits at all. It is no wonder many people are looking to stop smoking.

If you have decided to stop smoking, Click Pharmacy health experts applaud you for your decision. However, if quitting seems too complicated and the craving continues to persist, you can do several different activities that will fill the empty hole in your life while also proving beneficial for your physical and mental health. These activities will keep you busy and distract you from wanting to smoke. However, before you adopt an alternate action, first, you need to think about why you smoke. Your reasons for smoking will help determine which alternate activity will suit you best.

1.      When smoking is part of a daily ritual

Some people smoke because it has become a part of daily habits, like drinking tea or coffee. They smoke for the sake of smoking, or perhaps to keep their idle hands busy while doing something. If you smoke, for this reason, you can also easily quit if you put your mind to it. Consider using nicotine patches to stave off the craving when you stop smoking. You can also consider chewing gum to keep your mouth busy or try playing with a pen to keep your fingers busy.

2.      When you smoke to gain energy

Some smokers feel entirely useless without their dose of a cigarette. They feel a burst of energy, akin to an energy drink or coffee when smoking. On the other hand, they may feel unnatural fatigue or lack of energy without their recurrent smoke stick making an appearance. If you feel this way when you stop smoking, you can use other activities to give you energy instead of smoking.

Try incorporating exercise into your daily schedule to boost your energy level. Taking a brisk walk or running when the craving hits may also help. If physical activity isn’t your cup of tea, try breathing or meditating techniques to help you stay calm and focused. Also, try to avoid undertakings that make you more tired.

3.      When you like the feel of handling a cigarette

Some people like the mechanics of smoking more than the act of smoking itself. They grow accustomed to holding something between their fingers or putting it in their mouth. Such a habit is more of fixation than addiction.

If you like the feeling of holding a cigarette between your fingers, then you may try painting, drawing, or doodling instead. Holding a brush, pen, pencil, or straw will satisfy the touch fixation that comes with holding a cigarette. You may even subconsciously put the pen or the brush in your mouth, satisfying the oral fixation. If drawing or writing doesn’t appeal to you, try holding something you can play with, like a paper clip, elastic band, rubber ball, etc.

4.      When you smoke because you genuinely enjoy it

Unfortunately, smoking quickly proceeds from a fashion statement into an addiction. A smoker genuinely starts to like the slight rush of pheromones that comes with a puff of smoke. If you associate smoking cigarettes with a pleasurable activity, you may try other activities that are equally or more enjoyable without the side effects.

You can try treating yourself to a tasty snack when the craving hits. Spend time with your friends, play a game, watch a movie, take a long bath, read an interesting story, or do anything else that may distract you from the need to smoke. You can also try learning to play a musical instrument or engage in a productive habit, like gardening during your journey to stop smoking.

5.      When you smoke to relax

Some people feel all their tensions melting away when taking a puff of a cigarette. Unfortunately, such people may also start smoking like a chimney when their financial, familial, or personal life becomes too hectic. If you are among those who smoke to relax, you can engage in other, healthier activities that may also help achieve the same objective.

Workout, run, or simply walk around the block for relaxation. Play a device, paint a picture, or do some other enjoyable and relaxing activity. Go on a holiday, visit a spa, get a massage, or meditate. There are many activities that can help you relax in a healthier and more efficient manner.

Stop Smoking, The Last Word.

Every expert around the world agrees that smoking is not a good activity. It may be legal in many places, but that doesn’t mean it is good for you. It’s easy to get started but very hard to quit. If you have decided to be brave and quit smoking, you are doing yourself and your loved ones a huge favour. Quitting smoking takes a lot of courage. If you find it hard to quit, engage in the above practices to help make the transition easier and more manageable.
