Mum what are these?

I was out shopping the other day with Olivia, having a browse around the local charity shops and Olivia was looking at the kids toys and dvd’s when she picked up something she had never seen before. A Video tape!

“What’s this mum?”

She asked looking a little bit puzzled,

“Well, it’s a video” I told her “What we watched films on before DVD’s”

Oh, she said.

“What do you mean before Dvd’s? ”

?????

“Well before DVD’s were invented, we watched videos”

I started laughing, then I started to feel just a little bit old!

My child doesn’t know a world before dvd’s, before a time where you could access the internet from a home pc or laptop. She would never know what it was like to have to traipse off to the local library to do homework research, in the days before Google.

She is born into a generation of technology where children have mobile phones not have to sit by the home phone. To play games on an Ipod, yes she has one that does everything except make calls but she can video chat!, to surf the internet when she is bored and watch videos on You Tube. To have to choice to not only build friendships in real life but in the virtual world too.

She will never know the frustration of having to run to the loo, or to get a drink during the adverts, thanks to the invention of sky+, scared of missing your favourite programme, no on demand services when I was growing up!

She doesn’t even know why we have CD’s! I had to explain that to her too! But why she said when you can just put the Ipod or your phone on! Oh dear!

I wonder if in years to come Olivia will have to explain the Ipod or mobile phones to her children, what will she grow up with in the future that will be a totally alien concept to her children and possibly me in my senior years?

I have had this thought before that my children won't know cassette, records or vhs, it really does make me think how old I am , a different generation. #sharewithme

kids reacting to what a walkman is =P

So funny. Yes it is a bit weird that they are reacting that way. Amaze of how things before DVD. But we are I think reacting to our parents stuff too when we are kids. I can only imagine the technology when are kids are the parents already! #sharewithme

My 12 year old asked me how old I was when I got my first Facebook account the other day. When I told her they didn't exist when I was a kid and that internet hadn't even been invented me, she just couldn't get her head around it ! Show her a picture of the old Vic 20 computers – that will blow her mind ! lol
