Your Body Will Thank You For Making These Changes

Everyone knows how important it is to take care of their health. And when you get older, being healthy becomes much more important.

But here’s the thing: not everyone knows just how simple it can be to improve your health. And this post is going to look at some changes you can make to help you improve your health now and in the future.

Drink More

Now, generally, the advice is to drink more water, and while you do need to make sure you’re getting more water into your day, it doesn’t need to be solely from plain water. If you need to add something to your water to encourage you to drink more, that is preferable to not drinking any at all. Ideally, drink as much plain water as you can, but cumulatively you need around 2 litres of water per day from all liquids and even foods too.

If you can avoid high-calorie drink options and add sugar-free squash to water to give it more taste, if you can, add fresh fruit to your water to encourage you to drink more, great. But Diet Coke, Pepsi Max, etc., all count too, as do tea and coffee. However, it’s still important to limit those and focus on water.

Cucumbers are a great source of water, as is fruit, especially melon. So, it’s not just drinking water on its own that you need to focus on if you’re not a water fan, but fluid intake in total.

Sleep Quality

Sleep quality and sleep duration go hand in hand. You can have long sleeps, but if they’re disturbed or broken, you won’t feel the benefit of them as much. The general guidance is to aim to get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night.

From here, you need to look at your sleeping environment and make changes where necessary. It might be that you need a new mattress or to invest in blackout curtains. You could find removing a TV or electronics from the room works better for you, as will creating a more consistent sleep schedule, i.e., going to bed and waking up at similar times every single night and morning.

Add Movement

Movement is really important for everyone, but not everyone can get the same type of movement into their day. And the most beneficial type of movement is movement you can sustain. It doesn’t need to be intensive or take over your life; instead, it needs to complement it.

It might be that going for a walk every day and focusing on getting a minimum number of steps works for you. Couch25K could be great to get into running. Taking up swimming or aqua classes is ideal for those who need exercises that are not as harsh on joints, as the water is more supportive. Or you can head to the gym for instructor-led classes or strength training. If you’re not sure where to start or you need more help knowing what to do, working with a personal trainer will never be a wasted effort. But remember, exercise needs to be something you can sustain consistently and benefits your life, not takes over it.
