Home decor trends that won’t go out of style

I don’t know about you, but as I have gotten older, I am more interested in the latest home decor trends than in fashion or media trends. In fact, I have been known to spend many an hour with my friends over a bottle of gin on girls’ night in, discussing the things we would like to do to our homes.

I have so many ideas for home decor trends I want to incorporate into my home. I am a massive fan of wall panelling, and I think my hallway would benefit from a dado rail to compliment the white-painted walls with glitter (subtle but eye-catching in the light, trust me!) Suddenly I am more Property Brothers than wild nights out, and I am here for it.

But while I am not yet at the stage where I feel like I want to branch out into the home decor scene on Instagram, I do want to make some changes at my home. Especially now, I am declaring 2023 my year of decluttering (I even wrote about it recently). Once I get my “stuff” to more acceptable levels, I can add some home features that won’t date. Because let’s face it, no one wants to invest in home decor trends only to find 2 or 3 years down the line; they are out of fashion, or you absolutely regret your choices. 

Home Decor Trends That Don’t Go Out of Fashion

Spending in the UK on home decor items has risen to a massive £2.2 billion. At the same time, the Renovation Nation Report found that the average homeowner spent nearly £1,500 on home renovations and furnishings in 2022. So while renovations are big business thanks to the housing market, it makes sense to do your homework before investing in specific decor trends and changes to your home to ensure they are changes you can enjoy for many years to come. 

Window Shutters

Window shutters are a great alternative to curtains and blinds and are a great addition to any home. The beauty is they are available in various styles, colours, and finishes to suit any decor scheme. I would love window shutters; however, with old-fashioned triple-glazed windows, I don’t know how it would work (I have interior sliding window panes from double-glazing and newer external double-glazed windows).

Open shelving options have become popular in recent years and, as such, have become a go-to option for many different spaces around the home, be it entire walls or alcoves or making a low unit in the wall with open shelves on the bottom half. Really flexible and stylish and completely customisable too.

Wood Panelling

We can’t talk about home decor trends without discussing wood panelling. Whether you want to go for the uber stylish reed panels in the bedroom instead of a headboard, the classic square wood panels across the whole wall or room or you want to go full cabin style with wooden walls, the reality is wood panelling in many forms is timeless and will add a touch of class and luxury to your home. 

The beauty of wood panelling is it can be as obvious or understated as possible. From creating a border around your ceiling for added character to geometric designs across a feature wall, there is the perfect style and design for any home decor scheme.

Plants

With the increased rise of sustainable living, having plants in your home has never been more fashionable. However, for a home decor trend you won’t fall out of love with, filling your home with plants can boost your happiness and improve your health and home too.

From a decor standpoint, nothing compares to a plant or two around your home. Whether you choose a small potted plant on a sideboard or a floor-standing potted plant such as the Monstera, adding greenery to your decor can complement any style in your home and really pull it all together. And if, like me, you are a notorious plant killer, then fake ones can work just as well. Olivia is actually looking at adding artificial plants to her room and trialling ivy off her shelves. So we’re getting in on this trend too.

Natural Fibres

Going back to the sustainability point made above with plants, natural fibres will always be in fashion and the more ethically produced, the better; choosing neutral hues, jute rugs, cotton throws, wood features, rattan, bamboo, paper etc., are all excellent design materials for home decor trends for every home.

Plus, you can easily incorporate natural materials into any design. Going for a sleek modern look? Then why not add reed or bamboo wood panelling (as mentioned above) as a feature on a wall? Choosing the shabby chic look? The jute rugs can be a great addition to any room, as can rattan units or baskets on shelving, or a distressed reclaimed wooden block can work well as a kitchen work surface or mantle piece. The only limitation is your imagination!

Personally, I love all of these options and have bits of them in some form or another, except for the open shelving and wood panelling. But never say never! So there we go. 5 home decor trends that won’t go out of style and can be easily incorporated into any home regardless of your taste or style.
