Getting your priorities in order during your retirement years

Have you ever thought about what will happen to you later on life should you need extra assistance due to medical issues or complexities due to old age?

The thing is, most of us take for granted that things will be taken care of for us should we lose the ability to make decisions for ourselves.

But how far in advance do we need to make plans and what exactly are the types of things we should be looking at taking care of whilst we can.

It makes sense to let your close family members in on your plans too when you make them. This way you can be sure that when the time comes to implement any of your wishes, you can be sure that people know exactly what you to happen and how you would like things to be executed by them.

So let’s have a look at some of the things you should consider putting into action for later on in life or should you find yourself needing extra assistance for a different reason.

Power of attorney

Who is going to speak for you when you can no longer speak for yourself? Have you appointed someone who can carry out your wishes when you need them too?

Registering a lasting power of attorney isn’t something you need to do too far in advance; however, it will help you to have it all prepared when the time comes. It will save time and extra worry knowing this is in place to help you. The advantage of having this registered in advance can help with complications should the person involved not have the mental capacity to correct errors. So getting this done when you are of sound mind can be hugely beneficial for everyone involved.

Care Providers.

Have you discussed what will happen to you should you need extra care and assistance in later years? We can all expect some decline in our physical and mental health as we age. But should you experience a condition which will magnify this, it is best to make plans to take into account any extra help you may need in the future. It may be worth looking into regular check-ups for things such as your hearing  and making sure your loved ones know your preferences when it comes to who is looking after your health.

Are you able to stay at home or move in with family members? This is the preferred method for most people, but it isn’t always possible or practical.

Looking into the different care solutions available in your area is essential. Whether you choose to look at I’m home assistance, or you decide that moving into a care home is the best. Make these options in plenty of time and if you can, have a say in the choice, so you know what will happen when the time comes.

This is one of the major worries amongst family members when it comes to finding the correct care assistance for loved ones. So make an informed decision ahead of time and make sure to let people know your wishes before that option is taken away from you.

Make a Will

One of the most contested things after a person passes away is their will. Drawing up a will when you’re still in sound mind can save a lot of problems for loved ones dealing with the aftermath of your passing.

Have a witness and get your will notarized so everyone is aware of what you want to happen and who you want to have anything you leave to specific people.

Be clear and specific and make sure this is done in plenty of time to make sure it can be abided by once it needs to be executed.

So whether you are leaving family heirlooms or mementoes or you have savings, you wish to distribute between family members have it drawn up well in advance, so you have peace of mind.

Discuss end of life preferences

If you have a terminal illness or you want to let your preferences be known ahead of time, discussing your end of life options is vital.

Whether you discuss options with your GP, family members or friends, it is something you need to discuss and let your views be known about.

As morbid as it may be, the last thing you want is for people not to know your wishes and struggle to make decisions for you as they are unaware of what you want.

Talk to your loved ones about any special measures that may be needed to keep you alive. Do you want this to happen or not? Also, inform them if you would like to be an organ donor or not.

At a time when emotions are high, it pays to be organised and have your wishes known and carried out to cause as little distress to everyone as possible.

In conclusion;

It pays to be prepared for when you’re at an age when you may have to look at what will happen should you need extra care and assistance.

Regardless of your situation or wishes one of the things to take away is that being proactive and forward planning is best for everyone. Including loved ones in any decisions you make and having your wishes known is essential to make sure everything is carried out as you prefer should you not be able to make the decisions yourself.

Leave official documents with a loved one so you can trust them to carry out everything you have requested and ensure that should the worst happen, you are prepared for all eventualities.

As hard as it is to do, having hard conversations in plenty of time can be beneficial for everyone and help ease all stress and worries for you and your whole family.

So take care of this now before it is too late. Your family will appreciate it when the time comes, so they know they are doing exactly what you wished they would do.
