6 Ways Your Teen Can Make Money
If you’ve got a teenager, you’ll know all too well that they always want something new. Whether it’s the latest Jordans or a new phone, it can be difficult to explain that money simply doesn’t grow on trees. However, you still want them to have the things they want in their life, so what’s the solution? Let’s take a look at some great ways for your teenager to raise some money so they can afford a night out at the movies or to go on a shopping spree with their friends.
Part time job
One of the most obvious yet simple ways for your teenager to earn some money and begin to understand money management is by encouraging them to get a part time job. School is important, so you don’t want it to overshadow their studies, but there are plenty of places that will take on a student part time in the evenings and at the weekends. They could get a job in a retail store or by waiting tables to help earn money to spend on the things they love (and put some into savings).
Sell old belongings
If a part time job simply isn’t something they can manage at the moment, then you could encourage them to sell their old belongings. They may have clothes that they don’t wear anymore that they could sell on eBay or Vinted. Or, if they’ve recently upgraded their phone, you could encourage them to sell their old one. Just make sure you remind them on how to clear google search history to make sure the new owner doesn’t have access to any of their personal data.
Babysitting or dog sitting
Another great way your teen can earn some money occasionally is by picking up a babysitting or dog sitting job. Put flyers up in your neighbourhood and post alerts on your social media saying that your teen is looking to make some extra money. Not only will this help bump up their pocket money, but it will help teach them responsibility too.
Going down the same route, your teen could also offer a dog walking service too. Lots of people work long hours and need someone to help make sure their dogs are well cared for – one of those things being a long walk each day. It’s a great way for your teenager to get some much needed exercise in, especially if they’ve been sitting in a classroom all day!
Car washing or gardening
If babysitting or dog sitting/walking isn’t really your teen’s style, then perhaps they could offer a car wash or gardening service? They could pass out flyers around your home and in nearby streets to offer simple skills that some people simply don’t have the time for. There’s a good chance you’ll get some people asking for their cars to be washed at the weekend, and there’s probably someone that can’t manage to mow their lawn anymore. You’ll be surprised at how many people are willing to pay for services like these!
Freelancing online skills
Teens are tech whizzes in this day and age, and many of them possess the skills to do real-life jobs that could earn some serious money. So, if you’ve noticed your son is brilliant with coding or your daughter is a whizz on Photoshop, encourage them to sell their skills online. They can sign up to websites like Upwork of Fiverr and earn money that way. Not only is it a great way to earn money quickly, but once they’ve built up a reputation they could be setting themselves up for a very successful career.
Blogging or vlogging
Finally, most teenagers are posting online in this day and age, so why not take the chance to make some money from it? Lots of teens are posting get ready with me (GRWM) videos before school and talking about their lives, doing room tours and other fun things like that. It might take some time to build, but influencing online can make a very nice wage packet. Just be sure to monitor their profiles for their safety.
If you’re not comfortable with your teen posting videos of themselves, then perhaps you’d be happier with them writing a blog? They could still do tutorials and show off their skills without needing to show their faces or delve into their personal lives too much. There’s lots of money that can be made through link placements and affiliate links, not to mention being sent freebies to review on their blog too.
