Your garden might just be the source of all the wildlife in the neighbourhood, if you’re someone who keeps it well growing, pruned, and tilled all year round! A good garden can be filled to the brim with wildlife, and you’ll definitely have more than enough worms in the soil to help keep the whole place healthy. 

And because of this, it’s time to give back – the wildlife you help make a home for might need a helping hand over the winter season, and there are plenty of things you can do. Somewhere Warm to Hide

Any wildlife that comes into your garden is going to need shelter over the winter. Just like human beings, the elements outside can be harsh on their health, even when they’ve evolved to have fur and hibernate during the harshest of times! 

However, rather than forcing the wildlife in your garden to find their own little hideaways to bunker down for the winter inside, why not craft them a bit of shelter yourself? After all, there are plenty of places in your garden, as well as plenty of garden equipment, can be turned into makeshift shelters for the time being. 

An overturned plant pot, for example, could be a nice dark and warm room for frogs or bees to crawl into, or even a bird who may have had their wings injured. It’s important to focus on the ground level of your garden!

At the same time, hang up bird boxes and bee boxes on your fences and any trees in your garden. Even squirrels can use squirrel nests if you ever find one in the garden centre to buy, so hang one of those up in a tall tree nearby. 

Something to Nosh on!

Of course, wildlife needs to eat. And when it comes to protecting the habitats around you over the winter, putting something to nosh on out there will definitely attract creatures to your garden. And seeing as you’ve already made up their beds and put a roof over their heads, there’s a good chance they’ll stay right where they are for the winter!

It can be quite expensive to purchase wildlife food over and over again, so feel free to buy Bird Seed and such in bulk. Get dough balls and some chunkier foods for creatures to take and stow away in their hideouts. If you have bees in the garden or staying in a bee hotel, you can rejuvenate them with a bit of sugar water – but don’t leave this stuff out, in case you get an infestation of ants in the meantime! 

The winter can be hard on every living thing out there, so do your bit for the environment over the upcoming season. There’s a lot you can do, so why not?
