I can’t believe Olivia is 16 this month! Time really does fly. When it comes to special birthdays, I struggle with knowing what to get and what she will like. After all, she doesn’t really go without, and it can be tricky to find something that won’t just be added to her “stuff” in the bedroom.

Over the years, we have bought her some fantastic gifts such as a digital camera for Christmas or a Pandora bracelet she can add charms to as and when. This is perfect for commemorating special birthdays and events. But your 16th birthday needs to be that little bit special, doesn’t it! This year, Olivia’s dad took over the planning and organizing and has a whole weekend of treats for her to enjoy. There will be family meals out, a grown-up meal with her school friends, presents, treats and finally coming home to be spoilt some more. And of course, there needs to be epic birthday cards you can treasure too.

But what to buy a teenage girl for her 16th birthday?

I’ll be honest; I am stumped too. If you are reading this for inspiration for 16th birthday gift ideas, I decided to pull together some ideas that have worked for me in the past.

For my 16th birthday gift ideas this year, I decided to let Olivia have the one thing she has been asking for for many years now. She has been desperate for a dog. So in January, we adopted Tegan from Dogs Trust as an early birthday present. We decided to go down the adoption route instead of a puppy as we believe all dogs deserve the chance to have a loving home plus, she looked adorable in her profile, and she has been the perfect fit for us so far! On top of her dog, who she requested is presented in her birthday wearing a bow! I will be getting her some treats and keepsakes to open too.

Trips and Holidays

I am toying with one idea to take Olivia on a short break for her birthday once her GCSEs are finished. It will give her something to look forward to and to remember for her birthday. We are also looking at doing the same for my eldest niece, who is 18 at the end of the year. I was thinking of a short trip to a hotel for a weekend or to a caravan park. I’m not sure yet and need to check the dates, but this could be a great idea. I might even book a hotel at the Trafford Centre where she can take advantage of going shopping, visiting the cinema and enjoying any activities they have or pop up events.

Jewellery

Jewellery is always a great idea for unique gifts for 16th birthday gift ideas. As I mentioned, she has her charm bracelet to add special memorable charms too, but other jewellery styles also make great gifts. Photo Gifts

Regular readers will know that I am a huge fan of photo gifts, and we have a range of gifts from previous birthdays and Christmases, including blankets, photo slates, calendars, canvases and more. But creating a photo book of their life so far with all of their pictures from a baby right through to their teenage years can make an extra special and more personal gift, don’t you think? I will be scouring all the images I can find of Olivia on random memory cards to see what I can put together. I also want to put together a photobook of our recent trip to Disneyland Paris too as we had such a great time.

Subscription Gifts and Passes

We have had many subscription gifts over the years, and I still think they make great gifts. For 16th birthday gift ideas, subscription boxes can be ideal. From beauty boxes to collector’s items (Olivia had a Pop! Vinyl subscription – she has over 100 Pops!), food subscriptions, stationery, books or pretty much anything else you can think of. Simply identify something your child is interested in and purchase them a subscription period, so they get ongoing gifts throughout the year.

Cash

If all else fails, I don’t know any 16 year old who wouldn’t like to receive cash. It isn’t the most inspiring; however, instead of stuffing an envelope full of notes, why not look for fun and different ways to gift money. One of my sisters put 16 £5 notes into wallets to be pulled out of a cake for my niece. Or you could do a balloon pop where they have to pop balloons to get the money.
