Avoiding Burnout: How to Protect Your Energy

More and more people are exhausted and burnt out because they weren’t able to catch the signs and symptoms early enough to take action. Most people should be able to identify when things are getting bad and learn how to make a change. However, there is so much pressure in society now to be busy and productive that people are not able to identify the signs, or they purposefully ignore the signs and end up burned out.

This is a real shame, as you don’t want to spend your life burnt out. You want to aim for a happier, more fulfilling life, where you can manage stress and live with more ease and joy in your day.

To help you on your journey, here are some top tips on how you can avoid burnout and protect your energy.

#1 Understand what burnout really looks like

Burnout is more than just feeling a bit tired. Burnout is emotional detachment, physical exhaustion, and a sense of hopelessness or meaninglessness in your day-to-day life. It can sneak up on you when you least expect it if you aren’t self-aware. Once you hit the wall of burnout, you have a long road to recovery on the horizon. This is why it is vital to learn the signs, mitigate it as early as possible and even prevent it.

#2 Know and respect your limits

It is vital that you identify what your limits are. But it doesn’t just stop there. You need to have enough self-respect to not abandon yourself and instead, respect those limits. Many people do know what they are, but they choose to ignore them. Make a commitment to yourself to understand what they are and to better honour yourself and your wellbeing. This will help you long term, and you will find life is much more fulfilling and a lot less stressful. Every time you take on extra work or say yes when you want to say no, you are abandoning yourself. Take some time to set personal boundaries and practice implementing them.

#3 Build a stress-relief toolkit

A stress-relief toolkit is an excellent thing to build and have handy. Consider what coping strategies help you prevent and deal with triggers and stressors in your life. Everyone will have their own unique toolkit that helps them get through different parts of their day. For some people, this might be a breathing technique. For others, this could be journaling, yoga, an afternoon nap or a quiet walk at the beach. Some people like to use physical things to help them, for example, taking a quiet vape break during the day for a mindful pause. The key to the activity is the intention behind it, and the mindfulness to complete it with. Consider different things you can do at different times for different stressors, and call on them when you need them.

Burnout is not a good place to be. It can take years to recover. Consider these top tips to help you avoid and prevent it.
