When Tracy Kiss sent me a copy of this ebook to read for purpose of the review I admit it wasn’t a book I would have picked out for myself. Described as a cross between 50 shades and Bridget Jones this book featured scenes which aren’t suitable for under 18’s and if I am completely honest some of them didn’t really benefit the story.
We meet April as an insecure young woman on the cusp of turning 30 when she meets Shaun on Facebook through mutual friends. Shaun gives her everything she has been missing in life and slowly April realises that she doesn’t have to be the ugly duckling she perceives herself to be. Slowly April starts to change into the person she thinks she should be. Slowly transforming into her beautiful swan and realising that Shaun doesn’t actually like who she is becoming April finds herself single again.
April is a likeable character who is easy to relate to.
Yet I found myself losing empathy for her the more she changed I wasn’t sure I liked who she was changing into if I’m honest especially when she meets Jay. She seems to be trying too hard to be the person she thinks she should be and the real April is getting lost in the changeover. Tracy draws you in with her descriptive writing and changes April right before your eyes.
I find the fact that April choosing to stay with Jay despite the fact he thinks she maybe isn’t as pretty as other girls telling that despite her changing her outward appearance those insecurities are really still there especially the fact that she will do anything to please him. There is a meeting between April and Shaun at the end which shows how much they both have changed from the start even if their story felt a little rushed and their meeting again not going so well.
It was an easy book to read and quite short so if I finished it quite quickly great for when you want a quick read as there is nothing to think about really. The characters didn’t really make an impact on me so much that I really connected with them and made me want to carry on reading. I would have liked it to have been a little bit longer with more of a back story to all the characters before they all met as we only really get to know them through April and know what she knows about them which doesn’t seem a lot.
Like is Shaun, who seem too good to be true like that because he likes to control his women and look and behave the way he wants them to or is there really nothing more to Jay than being shallow and liking women for how they look and being into working out? And even though we get to read about April’s last boyfriend is there anything else that happened for her confidence to be at this low level?
