The Pros and Cons of Going Back to School for A Nursing Degree with Older Children

After tracking down babysitters at the last minute, begging relatives to watch your children, and looking for inexpensive childcare providers, there will eventually be a day where your children will be able to fend for themselves. Thankfully, this moment will come well before adulthood. As such, parents who no longer need to concern themselves with child care and babysitters can start to consider the realities of going back to school. With a child who is old enough to come home after school, complete all homework assignments, and even get dinner started unassisted, you can compare FNP vs DNP programs and figure out how going back to school can fit into your life. Here are the pros and cons of going to college with a focus on nursing with older kids.

Get to Develop a New Career

Even if you already work in the medical industry, going to college and completing an online DNP program is the best way to develop a stable new career. If you have children that don’t need much assistance from you and are starting to have busy social lives, you can go to college pretty much undisrupted. Additionally, going back to school when you have an older child also means that you can choose your class and study schedules without having to first make sure that your children are sorted. This means you may be able to complete your nursing degree program quicker.

Less Time to Bond with Your Kids

Any endeavour that you take up while you still have adolescents in your home is going to take time away from bonding. So, instead of being available to play board games together every night after dinner, you might need to retire to your bedroom so that you can prepare for a test or an online class. Your child might not mention it, but be prepared to find other ways to stay close and connected with your kids as you work towards your degree. You definitely do not want to grow apart from your child or have them thinking that going back to college is more important than your relationship.

You Have a Chance to Study Together

While your kid was growing up, you were the one to show them how to tie their shoes, recite the alphabet and other life skills. With older children, you get the opportunity to share notes, compare study techniques and spend quality time just being quiet together in the same room. Your child is likely preparing to take their SATs, writing essays to get into school, and taking advanced coursework. While you might not be covering the same materials in your nursing classes, there should be at least a couple of parallels.

If you want to go back to college and become a nurse it will be easiest if you wait until your children are a bit older. Now, your children don’t have to be in their last year of high school but they should at least be out of daycare. Getting a better education will help you to provide for your children and raise your self-esteem.
