5 Brain Exercises That Work: Tips for Students

Most of us think of a physical workout when talking about exercising. While maintaining a healthy body is important, keeping the brain sharp and healthy is equally important. Brain exercises are even more important for students, whose regular activities involve memorizing things and processing information.

There are actually simple exercise routines you can do to keep the brain healthy. We are going to take a look at the five brain exercises that work in this article.

Calculate in Your Mind

One of the easiest brain exercises is doing calculations. You simply set a starting point, decide a constant, and keep adding that constant until you reach a certain target. Let’s say your starting point is 212 and your constant is 20. You start by doing 212+20, which is 222. You then add another 20 to the result and continue to do so to exercise the brain.

Play Music

Yes, playing music is a proven way of training the brain. There is something about the structure of music and the way we play instruments that helps the brain regenerate its cells faster. Studies compiled by the masters in the education department of the University of Cincinnati confirmed that learning to play music – or learning something new and complex – is good for the brain.

It doesn’t stop there either. Music also helps with creativity and critical thinking. The same studies by the online masters in education program also revealed that music helps rejuvenate the ageing mind.

Learn a New Language

Similar to playing music, learning language is a good exercise for the brain. Thanks to apps and supporting software, you can now learn a new language anywhere and at any time. You simply download apps such as Duolingo and use it on your phone to master a foreign language.

Test Your Memory

The next time you write down the things you need to buy at the supermarket, try to memorize the list and recall it after an hour. This is a memory training and it is good for stimulating the brain.

You can even make a complicated list for added challenge. The more complicated the list, the more satisfied you will be when you can memorize its contents and the more motivated you will become in the end.

Draw a Map

We do this instinctively when visiting a new place; we map the place in our mind so that the next time we visit the place, we know the general location of everything. Doing it deliberately the next day, however, is a serious brain exercise that works in improving your ability in understanding complex problems.

After visiting a new place, try to recreate the location as a 2D map in your mind. Position everything accordingly and visualize. It is actually a fun exercise to try since it also helps you remember interesting memories from the visit in the process.

These are only five brain exercises you can try, but they are five exercises that work. If you want to keep your mind sharp, these are some of the things you can try to get started.
